Greenway 5K is this Saturday

This year, the race will start at Pennypack on the Delaware to celebrate the newly opened Baxter Trail riverside portion.

Northeast Philadelphia’s most scenic 5K race is coming this weekend.

The Greenway 5K/1.5 mile walk will take place Saturday, Oct. 6, beginning at Pennypack on the Delaware Park.

The race will highlight the Baxter Trail, the newest Riverfront North segment that connects Pennypack on the Delaware Park to Pleasant Hill. A riverside portion of Baxter Trail opened in the spring.

“The new trail has beautiful views of the Delaware River,” said Stephanie Phillips, executive director of Riverfront North Partnership. “It is a great way to get the family outdoors and reconnect with your riverfront.”

Presented by Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, this is the fifth annual race hosted by Riverfront North.

Lindsay Brzowski, communications manager for Riverfront North, said the path will take runners and walkers through restored forests, butterfly meadows and even past a bald eagle’s nest.

“This is an exciting event for the area because people will have access to experience a new trail right in their backyard, and can enjoy existing trails and parks they may not have even realized are just down the road from them,” Brzowski said.

All proceeds for the race go toward hosting events at the parks and trails of Riverfront North as well as year-round maintenance.

The race is sponsored by Langan Engineering, Seravalli Inc., Councilman Bobby Henon, SureShade, Ground Reconsidered and Biohabitats.
