A student found a gun Thursday morning in the gardens outside Fox Chase Elementary School, according to a letter penned by the school’s principal to parents.
The student reported the finding to a teacher, and the school immediately went into lockdown, the letter said. School District officials and police were notified of the incident and took possession of the gun, according to the letter.
No students or staff were injured, the school said.
It’s unclear whether the gun was related to a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday night near the school on the 7900 block of Ridgeway St. A police department spokesperson declined to comment on whether the gun was related to the homicide, citing an ongoing investigation.
The letter to parents was written by Fox Chase Elementary School Principal Robert Caroselli and distributed Wednesday afternoon.
“Our staff responded with professionalism and we are extremely proud of all of our students, who remained calm and compliant throughout the entire process,” Caroselli said in the letter.
“I want to assure you that we take the health and safety of our students very seriously and that we have taken the necessary steps in response to this incident,” he continued.
Caroselli said the school planned to hold an assembly Friday morning for students in grades 3–5 to discuss personal safety and awareness. ••
