MaST, Somerton Civic to host third community yard tree giveaway

The giveaway is this Saturday.

MaST Community Charter School and the Somerton Civic Association have been awarded a grant to host their third community yard tree giveaway event.

The giveaway will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon, at MaST’s campus at 1800 Byberry Road. Nine kinds of trees are available.

The grant was made possible by TreePhilly and its partners, TD Bank, the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the city Department of Parks and Recreation.

Northeast residents can sign up for a tree by following this link.

Trees can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

Participants can register for up to two trees. They must agree to plant the trees on private property in Philadelphia, and in a yard rather than in a container or by the roadside. At the giveaway, TreePhilly will provide a planting and care demonstration, mulch and educational materials.

Somerton Civic Association President Chris Bordelon believes tree giveaways help Somerton and other Northeast neighborhoods maintain their distinctive character.

“It’s easy to surround yourself with concrete and asphalt in Philadelphia,” Bordelon said. “Trees and green space help to make our part of the city special.” ••
