Free trees, recycling bins available

Yard trees will be given away on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Frankford Pause Park, 4673 Paul St.

In case of rain, trees will be given away at Daral Building, 4667 Paul St.

Trees must be planted in the ground on private property, not in containers or on the sidewalk.

Recycling bins and other sustainability resources will be available.

Time to celebrate at Crescentville church

Crescentville United Methodist Church, at Sentner Street and Hasbrook Avenue, will celebrate its 98th anniversary during the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday, Nov. 4. A celebration will take place at 4 p.m. to thank the congregation, families, neighbors and the community for the prayers, support and contributions given during the recent burglary and fire. Soup will be served.

Martin & Lewis tribute in Tacony

The Tacony Mayfair Sons of Italy will present a tribute to Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, with reflections of Frank Sinatra, on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Consolation Church hall, 7051 Tulip St. Sonny Averona Jr. and Johnny Bones will entertain the crowd.

Dougherty class of ’68 reunion

The 50th reunion of the 1968 Class of Cardinal Dougherty High School will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Wyndham Philadelphia — Bucks County, 4700 E. Street Road, Feasterville.

Winterization Day on Nov. 4

Northeast NORC is seeking volunteers for its annual Winterization Day on Sunday, Nov. 4.

Volunteers will seal drafty windows and doors; replace smoke alarm batteries; replace hard-to-reach light bulbs; rake leaves; clean windows; and clean out basements and garages.

The Exceptions coming to BVM

The Maternity BVM Alumni Association will present The Exceptions on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 7 to 11 p.m.

The concert will take place in the parish hall, 9322 Old Bustleton Ave.

Henon to speak at NE Regional Library

Dining Car celebrating Community Fun Day

The Dining Car, 8826 Frankford Ave., will take part in the Greater Holmesburg Business Association’s Community Fun Day on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Volunteers from the Free Library of Philadelphia will conduct children’s storybook readings at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., followed by cupcake decorating classes with the Dining Car’s Miss Heather Anne.

Local author Charity Rue will read her children’s book, Best Buds b & d, at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., followed by arts and crafts. ••

Reunion planned for Ryan class of ‘78

The Archbishop Ryan High School class of 1978 will hold its 40th reunion on Friday, Nov. 2, at the Fountain Room, 2980 Southampton Road.

Day trips scheduled with KleinLife

The Travel with KleinLife series offers one-day excursions.

It’s off to New York on Sunday, Nov. 4, to see the musical Mean Girls, playing at the August Wilson Theatre.

The excursions continue on Wednesday, Nov. 28, with a trip to Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. The trip features a live show with vocalist Michael McGeehan.

Staying closer to home, Travel With KleinLife will visit the Smoke & Mirrors Magic Theatre, in Huntingdon Valley, on Thursday, Dec. 11 to enjoy a private magic and comedy performance.

The final trip in the series is an excursion to Broadway on Sunday, March 10, to enjoy The Cher Show,

Activities at St. Nicholas Church

A delegation from the Ukrainian Synodal Administration for Chaplaincies will arrive at St. Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church, 817 N. 7th St., on Friday, Nov. 2.

Their itinerary includes blessing the commencement of St. Nicholas Church’s annual pierogi festival on Saturday, Nov. 3, at noon. The festival is a two-day event that concludes at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4.

With free admission and parking, attendees can enjoy homemade pierogis and other ethnic foods, a beer garden, holiday shopping from a variety of vendors, baked goods and non-stop live music.

There will be a divine liturgy at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 4.

Historical lecture in Frankford

The Historical Society of Frankford, 1507 Orthodox St., will host a lecture, Up the Lazy River, on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Archivist, historian and author Jack McCarthy will focus on the grand estates and mansions along the Delaware River in the Northeast in the 18th through early 20th centuries. All are welcome, and admission is free. Refreshments will be served. Donations and membership applications will be accepted.

Donate to Toys for Tots

Two Allstate agency owners in the Northeast are teaming up with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to spread holiday cheer through Dec. 7.

Community members are encouraged to stop by the agencies owned by Jonathan Wright (9967 Bustleton Ave.) and Barry Petroziello (12327 Academy Road) to donate toys.

“As a small business owner in the Bustleton section of Philadelphia, I see firsthand the opportunities and challenges facing our area,” Wright said. “I’m proud to join my fellow Allstate agency owners in supporting the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, and encourage community members to stop by to donate to this great organization.” ••

KleinLife and Ann Kids Child Day Care Center are teaming up to host a Bliss of Giving Festival to be held at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., on Sunday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Children are encouraged to donate previously loved clothing, toys, furniture, baby items and educational materials in good condition to be given to other children who are less fortunate.

There will be complimentary treats and entertainment, including a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, magicians and fun characters.

Best Buy moves to Whitman Square

Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy has taken over space formerly occupied by HHGregg at Whitman Square on Roosevelt Boulevard at Grant Avenue.

Whitman Square, run by The Goldenberg Group, is home to Walmart, Michaels, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Ashley Home Store, Famous Footwear, Famous Dave’s, Petco, Rite Aid, Longhorn Steakhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings and Chick-fil-A.

The Best Buy at Red Lion Road and Roosevelt Boulevard has closed. ••

Feast of 7 Fishes at Gallo’s

The 10th annual Dom Giordano’s Feast of the 7 Fishes will take place on Monday, Dec. 17, at Gallo’s Seafood, 8101 Roosevelt Blvd.

There will be a cocktail reception, featuring hors d’oeuvres, from 6 to 7 p.m.

A traditional Italian-American dinner, featuring buffet-style seafood dishes, will go from 7 to 9 p.m. Christmas music will be playing in the background.

Giordano, who hosts a morning radio talk show on 1210 AM, will present his Person of the Year.

Tickets cost $75 and must be bought in advance. Proceeds benefit the FOP Survivors Fund.

Irish jam session at FOP

The Ancient Order of Hibernians/Ladies AOH’s Freedom for All Ireland Committee will sponsor a Jam Session for Irish Freedom on Sunday, Nov. 11, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.

Veterans Day event in Burholme

A ceremony will take place on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, from noon to 1 p.m. at the World War I memorial at the intersection of Cottman, Oxford and Rising Sun avenues.

The ceremony will feature a fife and drums parade, a Boy Scouts Troop 160 parade, an invocation, wreath presentation, the playing of Taps and addresses by historian Fred Moore, state Rep. Jared Solomon and City Councilman Al Taubenberger.

Also, Troop 160 will discuss the history of its care for the memorial. ••

Christmas festival at All Saints

All Saints Church, 1811 Loney St. in Rhawnhurst, will host its annual Christmas Holiday Festival on Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be pictures with Santa Claus, handcrafted gifts, a “white elephant” sale and cakes and food for purchase. ••

Donate Christmas gifts

Houseman Recreation Center, 5091 Summerdale Ave., is accepting donations of Christmas gifts and toys from Nov. 25 to Dec. 11.

Gifts should be new and unwrapped. They can be for boys or girls ages 3 months to 16 years. ••

Retreat in Malvern Nov. 23–25

The Malvern Retreat House will host a retreat for men seeking to be closer to Christ.

The retreat is set for the weekend after Thanksgiving, Friday through Sunday, Nov. 23–25.

Murt bill becomes law

Legislation introduced by Rep. Thomas Murt to change the standards used to help families intervene when someone with a mental illness is too sick to seek treatment has been signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf.

“I introduced this legislation because under previous law we had to wait until the individual became a danger to him or herself or others before we could help,” Murt said. “But an individual who poses a clear and present danger is too sick to be treated on an outpatient basis, which means outpatient commitment is rarely used in Pennsylvania.” ••

Holy Inn going to AC

Holy Innocents Parish is planning a trip to the Tropicana Casino on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

A bus will depart from L Street and Hunting Park Avenue at 9:30 a.m.

The cost is $50 and due by Nov. 15.

Become a deputy sheriff

Sheriff Jewell Williams is recruiting candidates for deputy sheriff officer.

Deputy Sheriffs are the enforcement arm of the city court system. Deputies transport prisoners between area prisons and courts and secure court lock-ups and courtrooms. Once certified by the state, they are fully empowered law enforcement officers.

The annual salary for a deputy sheriff officer recruit starts at $44,622, with a benefits and pension package.

People interested in becoming a deputy sheriff must visit PhillySheriff.com and click the Job Interest portal. Those who express interest in the position through the portal will be notified by the city on or about Dec. 31 to formally apply for the position of Deputy Sheriff Officer Recruit.

The application period will end Jan. 18, 2019.

In February or March 2019, eligible applicants will be notified of a civil service test. Depending on where they place in the test, candidates will start the hiring process in May 2019.

Candidates must live in Philadelphia within six months of being appointed, be at least 18 years old, have a driver’s license, high school diploma or GED, and be free of any criminal record.

Applicants must pass a physical agility test with standards determined by a candidate’s age and gender. For example, a 20-year-old male must run 1.5 miles in under 14 minutes.

If chosen to be a Deputy Sheriff Officer Recruit, a candidate must successfully complete state-required certification as a deputy sheriff, which takes place over 19 weeks at Penn State. Candidates are paid for those weeks of training. ••

Synagogue celebrates anniversary

Temple Menorah Keneseth Chai, the oldest synagogue in the Northeast, will hold a 93rd anniversary celebration on Sunday, Nov. 18, at noon at the Victorian Room, 12273 Townsend Road.
