Holmesburg businesses celebrating 1st Saturday

Holmesburg businesses will have special offers and hold local raffles this Saturday.

The Greater Holmesburg Business Association met last week to continue planning for its 1st Saturday event on Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Businesses along Frankford Avenue, from Sheffield Avenue to Academy Road, are encouraged to offer specials and hold raffles.

Among those participating are the Dining Car, Holmesburg Bakery, Republic Bank, Summerdale Mills and the Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion.

For more information, go to the Greater Holmesburg Business Association page on Facebook.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Oddities Expo will also take place on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion, 8046 Frankford Ave.

Guests can tour the museum. The expo will feature a flea market, tattoo parlor, giveaways, marketplace, food trucks, live entertainment, board games and interactive attractions.

Tickets cost $13. Children under 12 will be admitted free.

There will be an extra cost for a taxidermy workshop, insect pinning class and owl pellet dissection.

A portion of ticket prices will go to charity.

The business association hopes Saturday’s event build momentum along the commercial corridor. Future plans tentatively include a Christmas tree lighting and addressing blighted properties on State Road, and possibly establishing a WeWork space. ••
