Designer Bag Bingo at St. Martha

Saint Martha School is hosting a Designer Bag Bingo on Saturday, March 2, at 7 p.m. in the parish hall at 11321 Academy Road.

Irish movie night on Thursday

Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 39, 7229 Tulip St., will host Irish Movie Night on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. The 2006 film The Wind That Shakes the Barley will be shown. Admission is free.

The film is set in the early 1920s during the Irish War of Independence. Damien is an Irish medical student about to leave Ireland to complete his medical training in London, but witnesses atrocities carried out by English soldiers and decides to join his brother Teddy in the Irish Republican Army’s fight for Irish freedom.

The film is 127 minutes in length and violent in nature. It is not suitable for children under 16. ••

Casting call at NE Regional Library

Stage it Up Theater Group is conducting a casting call at Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave., on Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The group is looking for people ages 12-18. Rehearsals and performance will take place on Saturdays in May and June at the library.

Free concert to be held on Tuesday

The Olney Symphony Orchestra will be performing on Tuesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Berachah Church, 400 Ashbourne Road in Cheltenham Township.

Holme Circle Civic meeting Wednesday night

The next Holme Circle Civic Association meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. at St. Jerome School Hall, Colfax and Stamford streets.

A representative from the American Water Resources Water and Sewer Line Protection Program will answer questions this new pipe-protection plan endorsed by City Council. ••

Breast cancer screening on Friday

The office of state Sen. John Sabatina Jr. will hold a breast cancer screening on Friday, March 1, at 10 a.m. at his district office at 12361 Academy Road.

The Fox Chase Cancer Center Mobile Mammography Van will be on site.

Women must be 40 or over; have a prescription from their doctor; must not be breastfeeding or have breast-fed within the last nine months; must not have had a breast cancer diagnosis within the last three years; must not have had a mammogram in 12 months; and must be able to board the van and stand while being examined.

Temple Health and Philadelphia Flyers Charities are partners in the event.

Scholarships available for HS seniors

The city will award 50 college scholarships for graduating high school seniors.

Scholarship awards are $1,000 for each academic year for four consecutive years of full-time enrollment in participating accredited four-year bachelor degree programs. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 1.

Designer bag bingo on Saturday

The St. Albert the Great development committee will sponsor a Faculty Designer Bag Bingo on Saturday, March 2, at the school, 212 Welsh Road in Huntingdon Valley. The cost is $35. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Bingo will begin at 7 p.m.

Toy train show to be held Sunday

The Train Collectors Association Atlantic Division will hold a toy train show and sale on Sunday, March 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The venue is Penns Landing Caterers, Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd.

There will be 140 tables with a variety of vintage toy trains and repair parts for sale, test tracks, operating toy train layouts, kids activities and door prizes for adults and children.

Admission is $5 per attendee or per family of two adults and all children 12 and under.

Local thrift shop reopening Sunday

Temple Menorah Keneseth Chai’s Classroom Thrift Shop, 4301 Tyson Ave., will be closed through Saturday, March 2. It will reopen Sunday, March 3.

Seussville coming to CORA Services

CORA Services, 8540 Verree Road, will host a Seussville celebration on Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be carnival games, face painting, arts and crafts, photos with Dr. Seuss characters, raffle baskets and resources for children and families.

Jeanes gets high grades

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services awarded Jeanes Hospital four out of five stars for overall quality.

Jeanes also received an “A” by the Leapfrog Group in a survey of teaching hospitals.

The hospital also earned an “A” in Leapfrog’s safety grades.

“In every part of our hospital, from our emergency department and outpatient services to our operating rooms and inpatient units, we see the dedication of our staff to quality, safety and improvement of process. Our achievements are truly a team effort among our physicians and staff. Without question, it is gratifying when this work is validated by independent organizations,” Jeanes president and CEO Dr. Marc Hurowitz wrote to physicians and staff. ••
