Auditions for music program

The nonprofit Share the Spotlight is holding auditions for musicians in grades six through 12 for a tuition-free summer rock music program. Auditions take place at Keystone Soundworks, 4900 Longshore Ave., beginning on April 5. The deadline to sign up is April 1.

To audition, students can learn any song by the Beatles, Led Zeppelin or Aretha Franklin on guitar, bass, drum set, keyboard or vocals. They should have some experience on their instrument and be highly motivated to practice and learn new parts.

The program will meet twice a week through June and July and perform an end-of-the-season show in a professional venue.

History fair at Cannstatter’s

Friends of Northeast Philadelphia History and the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce will present the Northeast Philadelphia History Fair on Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road.

Admission is free. There will be historic displays, presentations on local history and books, prints, photographs and other historical items.

Poetry at Holmesburg Library

Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave., will host an open poetry reading on Wednesday, March 20, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to any poets or songwriters 18 and older.

Participants are asked to sign in 10 minutes before the start of the show.

Ballet coming to Penn Charter

Metropolitan Ballet Company will host guest artists from the San Francisco Ballet’s trainee program for Variations/Collaborations, An Evening of Dance and Music on Saturday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at Penn Charter’s Kurtz Center, 3000 W. School House Lane.

The program will also feature collaborations with Settlement Music School.

Career fair to be held Friday

RecruitmentQueen will hold a career night on Friday, March 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. near the former Macy’s at Neshaminy Mall. RecruitmentQueen is also partnering with a professional photographer to offer free headshot photos for use in LinkedIn profiles.

So far, the following employers have signed up to exhibit: Sykes, TMA Bucks, Salute2Service, Traffic Plan, American Heritage Federal Credit Union, The Protocall Group, Vertical Screen, Sterling Limousine and the Horsham Clinic.

Vendors and bingo on Sunday

Redemption Lutheran Church, 8001 Bustleton Ave. (at Rhawn Street), is hosting vendor bingo on Sunday, March 24. Vendor shopping starts at 1 p.m., and bingo begins at 2 p.m.

The event is a fundraiser for the ministries of the church as well as Rhawnhurst Turning Point. Tickets cost $25. There will be 10 rounds of bingo, each with a prize from a vendor. Admission also includes snacks and an entry to the grand prize raffle. Guests are welcome to bring their own wine and beer.

Booze Bingo on Saturday

Calvary Athletic Association, 4330 Deerpath Lane, will host Booze Bingo on Saturday, March 23, at 8 p.m.

Doors open at 7 p.m.

Apply to become crossing guard

The Philadelphia Police Department is hiring school crossing guards. In response to the crossing guard shortage in the Northeast, City Councilman Brian O’Neill is encouraging local residents to apply. The application process runs through Friday, March 22. There will not be a written test, but preference will be given to Philadelphia residents, veterans and legacy and bilingual applicants.

Apply for training program

City Councilman Brian O’Neill announced that the Philadelphia Energy Authority is hiring for the Bright Solar Futures Summer Training Program, which provides young people with the opportunity to learn construction safety, how to install solar panels, the basics of energy efficiency and how to succeed in a new workplace.

Applicants must be city residents ages 14-21. The paid program will run weekdays from July 8 to Aug. 16, for 20 hours per week.

American Legion Post 810, 9151 Old Newtown Road, will host an Elvis Presley show on Friday, May 3.

Free trees on March 30

The Somerton Civic Association and MaST Community Charter School will host their fourth community yard tree giveaway on Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to noon at MaST, 1800 Byberry Road.

Twelve kinds of trees are available, 100 in all.

At the giveaway, TreePhilly will offer planting and care demonstrations, mulch and educational materials.

“People new to the giveaway often tell us that they’d heard that TreePhilly’s trees were of high quality,” said Somerton civic president Chris Bordelon, who notes that demand for trees has exceeded the supply at every prior Somerton giveaway.  

“They’ve been the best trees that money can’t buy.”
