Sports editor, reporters win press awards

The Northeast Times won three Keystone Press Awards in a contest conducted by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.

Sports editor Joe Mason won a first-place award in the Sports Event Coverage category for a story on Abraham Lincoln High School’s 2018 run to the PIAA Class 6A boys basketball championship game.

Reporter Jack Tomczuk won a second-place award in the General News category for a story on the community’s rallying around Ryan Lewis, an 8-year-old with cerebral palsy whose wheelchair was stolen from outside his Sheffield Avenue home.

Reporter Logan Krum won an honorable mention award in the Personality Profile category for a story on Mayfair resident Joshua Santiago, who offers free haircuts to homeless people to boost their self-confidence.

The Times competes in Division V, for weekly newspapers with circulations of more than 10,000. The Times has eight zones with a total circulation of 114,500.

Winners will be honored on May 18 at a banquet during the Pennsylvania Press Conference at the Hilton Harrisburg. ••
