Winners named in “There Ought to be a Law” contest

Eight students from schools within the 170th Legislative District have been chosen as the winners in the “There Ought to be a Law” contest sponsored by Rep. Martina White.

The laws were judged by Patti Rosati, 8th Police District community relations officer; Joe Staszak, 7th Police District community relations officer; and Brian McQuoid, of Allstate insurance.

The contest entrants were from fourth and fifth grades. The schools that participated included Stephen Decatur, St. Anselm, St. Christopher, Christ the King and Calvary Christian Academy.

The winners were:

• Lola Westfield, Christ the King, fourth grade. Law: Install speed bumps around schools and playgrounds.

• Lawrence Lei, St. Christopher, fourth grade. Law: Require seatbelts on all school buses.

• Addison Martin, St. Christopher, fifth grade. Law: Require equipment on public playgrounds for those with special needs.

• Leah Seiger, Decatur, fourth grade. Law: Require community service once a month.

• Leah Fitzsimmons, Decatur, fifth grade. Law: Install fire sprinklers in public buildings.

• Sophia Lodise, St. Anselm, fourth grade. Law: Require classes for people who adopt pets.

• James Bergmark, St. Anselm, fifth grade. Law: Make drivers over age 70 retake their driver’s test.

 

• Riley Dempsey, fifth grade, Calvary Christian Academy. Law: Assign police to every school zone.

The winners will be invited to the Capitol to have lunch with White and tour the historic building. ••
