Food truck night Friday at Hancock

Friends of John Hancock Elementary School will present a food truck night on Friday, May 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Fordham Road, adjacent to the school, 3700 Morrell Ave.

There will be a disc jockey and activities for kids. ••

Learn more about performing arts schools

Share the Spotlight is holding a free event to help students prepare for auditions to Philadelphia performing arts high schools on Thursday, May 30, from 7 to 8 p.m.

The info session takes place at the Tacony Lab Community Arts Center, 6918 Torresdale Ave.

Students and their families will learn about the audition requirements for schools including The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush and High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA).

They will also receive important general information about the School District of Philadelphia’s high school application process and timeline in the fall.

Meeting about playground improvements

City Councilman Brian O’Neill will hold a meeting to discuss improvements to the playground at Verree and Susquehanna roads on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at CORA Services, 8540 Verree Road. Neighbors are welcome to review plans and provide input.

Anyone who cannot make the meeting can review the plans on display at O’Neill’s office at 432 Rhawn St.

Local pubs celebrating Beer Week

The Grey Lodge, Hop Angel Brauhaus and Chickie’s & Pete’s on Robbins Avenue will be holding various events as part of Philly Beer Week, which runs from Friday, May 31, to Sunday, June 9.

Chickie’s & Pete’s, 4010 Robbins Ave., will be featuring new beers from Victory Brewing Company and Evil Genius Brewing Company Sunday, June 2, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., in addition to other events.

The Grey Lodge, 6235 Frankford Ave., will be holding its annual Hammer of Glory Relay in the morning on Friday, May 31, a Morning Wood Beer Brunch on Saturday, June 1, and a pilsner-and-pierogie-themed day on Thursday, June 6. Visit greylodge.com for more information.

Concert series starting Friday

The Danube Swabian Association, 1277 Southampton Road in Somerton, will be holding its free outdoor summer concert series on three upcoming Friday nights.

Soundwave (big band music) will perform on May 31, followed by Connolly and Murphy (Irish music) on June 14 and the Cardinal Dougherty Alumni Band on June 28. The public is invited. Monday benefit for nonprofits

3C of Connecting is sponsoring Connecting for a Cause on Monday, June 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Trifecta Sporting Club, 4666 E. Bristol Pike, in Feasterville. The cost is $25 and includes a buffet dinner, raffle baskets and more than 20 businesses and vendors.

Saturday event at Trinity Oxford

On Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a celebration of the history of Trinity Church, Oxford at Longshore and Oxford avenues.

Historical tours of the churchyard with reenactors will be offered with special guest appearances by Ben Franklin, Benjamin Rush and the Kings Highway Foundation. The tours will address the timeframe from the founding through the American Revolution. There will also be items for sale and refreshments. All proceeds will benefit the church.

Irish movie night on Thursday

Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 39, at 7229 Tulip St., will host an Irish movie night on Thursday, May 30.

The comedy Waking Ned Devine will be shown in the upstairs hall at 7 p.m.

The story is set in Ireland and follows two elderly men who are best friends. The men learn that someone in Tullymore, their tiny village of 52 people, has won the Irish Lottery. Joined by one of the men’s wives, they set out to find the winner.

Celebrate Ramadan at NE Regional

The children’s department of Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave., will present a Ramadan program for children on Wednesday, May 29, at 4 p.m.

Mayfair Grand Prix on Saturday

The Mayfair Grand Prix will take place on Saturday, June 1, at Frankford and Cottman avenues. The day will feature a classic car show from noon to 3 p.m. The race, featuring mini cars, will go from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Other activities will include live music, crafts, food trucks and spirits, all coordinated by the Mayfair Business Improvement District.

There will be appearances by NASCAR drivers Bubba Wallace, J.J. Yeley and Brendan Gaughan and Eagles wide receivers DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery. ••

Auditions for Joseph at Holmesburg Rec

The Star Players will hold auditions for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on June 3-4 at 7 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, 4500 Rhawn St. The show will be in October at the Venice Island Performing Arts Center.

Picnic at St. William

There will be a picnic on Saturday, June 1, from noon to 4 p.m. at St. William Parish in the convent lot and memorial hall, Argyle and Robbins streets.

The hall will be dedicated in memory of Monsignor James E. Mortimer at 3 p.m. The cost is $5 and includes a hamburger, hot dog, piece of chicken, corn on the cob, a serving of macaroni and cheese and a bottle of water.

Register derby cars in show

The Boy Scouts of America Northeast Philadelphia Roosevelt District will be displaying custom-made wood cars at the Mayfair Grand Prix, taking place on Saturday, June 1, from noon to 3 p.m. at Frankford and Cottman avenues.

The Scouts welcome the public to view the display and vote in the Best in Show competition.

Current and past Scouts are welcome to register their pinewood derby cars to be put on show. Entry is free.

Friday night is dance night

Friendly Singles 50 Plus hosts a weekly Friday night dance at the Bellmawr Fire Department Ballroom, at 29 Lewis Ave., in Bellmawr, New Jersey.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the dance goes until 10.

Singles, couples or a group over age 50 are welcome.

The cost is $11 and includes snacks and door prizes. There is a different live band each week. Ample parking is available.

Library loans jigsaw puzzles

Tacony Library, located at 6742 Torresdale Ave., has a collection of adult/teen jigsaw puzzles (500-1,000 pieces) available for loan.

People can check puzzles out on their library card for three weeks, just like a book, and renew them if they haven’t finished them yet.

The puzzles are of numerous themes and include a few special features, like an embedded mystery to solve or being double-sided for an extra challenge.

Sign up for diabetes program

A diabetes education and self-management program is being formed at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave.

The program will feature educational classes led by a certified diabetes education professional. People with diabetes will learn how to eat healthier, be physically active and monitor blood sugar levels.

There will be access to health and wellness programs, exercise classes and diabetes-friendly meals and personalized care plans.

Scouts at Pennepack Baptist

Local Scouts will be participating in Merit Badge Day at the Pennepack Baptist Church parking lot, 8732 Krewstown Road, on Sunday, June 2, starting at 8 a.m.

At 1 p.m., Scouts will honor the founding of the 331-year-old church with a ceremony in the church yard.
