Enter gardening contest

The deadline is Friday, June 7, to enter the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society gardening contest.

Interested participants can submit their gardens or nominate a favorite neighborhood garden at phsonline.org/gardeningcontest.

Gardens are judged onsite beginning in July by a panel of knowledgeable plant lovers. Judges will be assessing gardens on a variety of factors.

Exemplary gardens will be recognized in the fall. Photos and highlights of the winning gardens will be shared via the PHS website, social media and other communications.

Auditions for boys for free ballet classes

Metropolitan Ballet Company is holding auditions for its Boys’ Scholarship Dance Program on Saturday, June 8, at 9 a.m. at the Metropolitan Ballet Academy, 700 Cedar Road, Jenkintown.

Boys, ages 7-11 and 12-18, are eligible to receive free, weekly dance classes and performance opportunities from September 2019 through June 2020. Classes are taught by Metropolitan faculty Daniel Mayo and Etienne Diaz. No prior dance experience or pre-registration is required; boys should arrive ready to participate in a beginner class in gym clothes or dance attire.

Graveyard tour on June 12

All Saints’ Church, 9601 Frankford Ave., will host a graveyard tour on Wednesday, June 12, at 7 p.m.

The tour is titled Chemistry in the Graveyard. Visitors will learn of the major chemical manufacturers from Colonial times to the 20th century who are buried in the graveyard. Archaeologist and restorationist Seth Gartland will explain the chemicals used in the restoration of gravestones.

Light refreshments will be served. Donations to restore the graveyard are welcome. The rain date is June 19. Call 215-637-8787. ••

Fundraising bike ride on Saturday

The Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome Network Inc., which aids people with a genetic metabolic disorder that has no cure, will be participating in the Million Dollar Bike Ride.

The Penn Medicine Orphan Disease Center invites the public to take part in the sixth annual ride, set for Saturday, June 8, at 7:30 a.m. at Highline Park, 31st and Chestnut streets.

Afterward, the White Dog Cafe, 3420 Sansom St., will host a “Bike Then Brunch.” There will be raffle baskets to raise money to help find a cure for HPS.

Senior resource expos on Friday

The Frankford Community Development Corporation and the Peter Bressi Senior Center are hosting a Senior Resource Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Frankford Pause Park, 4673 Paul St.

There will be more than 30 tables with information on healthcare, nutrition, housing, legal assistance and other resources for seniors. ••

Documentary debuts on Big 5

A documentary, Resurgence of the Big 5, will air on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Part one will be on Tuesday, June 11. Part two follows on June 18. Show time is 6:30 p.m.

The cast will include Lionel Simmons, Jameer Nelson, Phil Martelli, Fran Dunphy, John Chaney, Speedy Morris and the successes of Temple, La Salle, St. Joseph’s, Penn and Villanova. ••

Wellness symposium at PPH

The Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6401 Martins Mill Road, will hold its eighth annual wellness symposium on Friday, June 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the front parking lot.

There will be blood pressure screenings, exercise classes, line dancing and light refreshments.

Fundraising dinner at BVM

Scout Troop 174 alumni and friends will sponsor a fundraising dinner on Saturday, June 8, at 5:30 p.m. at Maternity BVM parish hall, 9222 Old Bustleton Ave.

There will be a Hawaiian luau theme. The evening will feature a catered dinner, refreshments, games, activities, raffles, basket of cheer, 50/50, troop merchandise and gifts for sale.

The cost is $10 for kids under 18, $20 for adults and $60 for two adults and up to four kids. Tickets will be available at the door. Donations will be accepted.

Festival this weekend in Feasterville

Kilt Fest PA, a Celtic festival and highland games, will take place at Trifecta Sporting Club, 4668 E. Bristol Road, in Feasterville on Friday and Saturday, June 7-8, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
