Movie Friday night in Frankford

View local photographer’s work

A retrospective of the work of Northeast photographer Scott Weiner will be on display through Sunday, June 30, at the Old City Jewish Arts Center, 119 N. 3rd St. Weiner will hold a free photography workshop for emerging photographers on Wednesday, June 26, at 6 p.m.

Weiner began his career following his graduation from Temple University in 1976. His work has been published in hundreds of books, magazines, newspapers and websites. He was the photographer for Newsweek magazine for Live Aid.

Weiner has photographed celebrities such as Aerosmith, Warren Zevon, Elton John, Jay-Z, Sylvester Stallone, Taylor Swift and Stevie Wonder.

Concert series continues Friday

The Danube Swabian Association, 1277 Southampton Road in Somerton, will be holding its final free outdoor summer concert on Friday, June 28, with the Cardinal Dougherty Alumni Band.

Celtic Day Sunday in Bristol

The 23rd annual Celtic Day will take place on Sunday, June 30, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Bristol Riverfront Park.

The event is sponsored by the Celtic Heritage Foundation. Admission is free. Attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Various musical and dance groups will entertain throughout the event. A variety of food and merchandise vendors will be situated throughout the park, and the Celtic Heritage Foundation will have a “Celtic Bakery” under the wharf.

Barbecue for veterans

State Rep. Joe Hohenstein will hold a veterans appreciation barbecue on Sunday, July 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. outside the Veteran Boxers Association, 2733 E. Clearfield St.

The free event will feature dozens of area vendors offering a variety of veterans’ services. Information will also be available on city, state and federal services and programs benefiting veterans and their families.

Diabetes program available

People affected with type II diabetes can take advantage of a new diabetes education and self-management program being formed at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave.

The program will offer access to health, educational and wellness programs, exercise classes, diabetes-friendly meals, blood sugar-level monitoring and personalized care plans.

What are you waiting for?

City Councilman Brian O’Neill said there are more than 9,300 owner-occupied residential properties still eligible to receive the homestead exemption in the 10th Councilmanic District, but have not yet applied.

Under the new $45,000 homestead exemption, enrolled owner-occupants will save $629 annually.

In the coming weeks, O’Neill will be mailing applications to eligible property owners, encouraging them to take advantage of the program.

Anyone already enrolled in the program does not need to reapply.

Swim camp at Vogt Rec Center

Sing-ups are being taken for the Swim for Life Summer Camp program at Vogt Recreation Center, 6700 Cottage St.

Swim for Life is open to boys and girls ages 9 to 15 and will run from July 1 to Aug. 9, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There are two camp options: a competitive program for children who already know how to swim and an instructional program for children who do not know how to swim or need to improve their skills.

The campers also go on trips every Friday and participate in other camp activities as well as aquatics.

The cost of the six-week program is $250.

Watershed group gets new van

Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership, in an effort to better support its clean water work, fundraised to purchase a TTF Dream Van.

The van was wrapped with the TTF mascot, the Great Blue Heron, a bird that calls Tacony Creek home.

Owning a van will allow the organization to transport more people, tools and the Creekmobile, an 8-foot-long mobile environmental education center. The van will help with TTF Watershed Partnership’s creek-side plantings, trash clean-ups and outreach, which lead to cleaner, healthier waterways for the people and wildlife that rely on it as a source of drinking water.

Located in southeast Pennsylvania, the 33-square-mile TTF watershed flows into the Delaware River. The Tacony-Frankford Creek section of the watershed lies within neighborhoods such as Fox Chase, Frankford, Lawncrest, Northwood and Oxford Circle. ••

Art class planned at KleinLife

KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., is offering a four-week mosaics art class for active and maturing adults beginning on Monday, July 22, from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m.

The public is invited to participate.

The classes will run on four successive Mondays.

The class is open to everyone from those with no previous art experience working with mosaics to those who are familiar with the art form.

There will be a one-hour boat ride on the A.C. Cruise and a five-hour stay at Caesars Casino with $25 slot cash and a lunch buffet.

The cost is $70 and must be paid in full by July 2.

Openings for JEVS career program

JEVS Human Services has some seats open for its youth program, Project WOW (World of Work), that starts July 22. The program is located at JEVS’ career training school, Orleans Technical College, 2770 Red Lion Road.

This 24-week, grant-funded program is no cost to low-income, high school dropouts, ages 18-24, residing in Philadelphia. Project WOW helps youth to complete their education while at the same time providing career pathways training in the building trades and information technology fields.

Project WOW also provides GED test preparation; professional development; in-house job search assistance with a JEVS employment specialist; and apprenticeship and industry certification opportunities.
