Ryan grad the new superior general of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth

Sister Angela Marie Mazzeo, an Archbishop Ryan High School graduate, was elected last week as the superior general for the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

Sister Angela Marie Mazzeo, CSFN, right, the newly elected superior general of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, receiving the Congregation’s seal and symbolic key from Archbishop Tadeusz Wojda of Bialystok, Poland and outgoing superior general, Mother Jana Zawieja, CSFN, in Rome.

The election took place in Rome.

“It is very humbling to be entrusted with the role of superior general for the congregation,” Sister Angela Marie said. “I know that the fulfillment of this role is only possible through God’s grace and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, I am most grateful to all those who have and are praying for me and all the members of the newly elected general administration.”

Born in Philadelphia in 1966, her home parish was St. Christopher, in Somerton. Sister Angela Marie graduated from Ryan in 1984. After earning her bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Temple University, she entered the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in 1992.

Sister Angela Marie began her ministry at Nazareth Hospital, where she served for more than 15 years as a staff pharmacist, pharmacy supervisor and director of pharmacy. She also received a master’s degree in business administration from Villanova University. She has served as a councilor for the congregation’s general administration in Rome since 2010.

“As Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, we have united our prayers and support with our sister delegates as they elected Sister Angela Marie Mazzeo and our new general administration,” said Sister Mary Ellen Gemmell, provincial secretary for the sisters’ U.S. province. “We see the beautiful mix of cultures, backgrounds, experiences, language abilities and international views in the newly elected general administration that will help us during the next nine years.”

The newly elected general administration’s term begins immediately and will continue through 2028.

The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth serve families through active ministry in schools, hospitals, parishes, prisons and social service agencies.

Today, there are some 1,200 sisters serving in Australia, Belarus, England, France, Ghana, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Spain, Ukraine and the United States. Holy Family Province, the U.S. province of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, has about 220 sisters serving in Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. The Provincialate is located in Des Plaines, Illinois. ••
