Frankford fire leaves one dead, police officer injured

A fire at an apartment building on Griscom Street killed one person and left 16 residents displaced from their homes.

One person died, a police officer was injured and 16 people were displaced after flames erupted Wednesday night from a three-story apartment building in Frankford.

Firefighters responded just after 10 p.m. to the 5000 block of Griscom Street and found heavy flames coming from the rear of the building on the first floor, a Fire Department spokeswoman said. 

That’s where the deceased victim, who was not identified, was found. A police officer responding to the scene had to be hospitalized and is in stable condition.

It took fire crews about 30 minutes to get the fire under control, and more than 45 firefighters responded to the scene.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, and the Medical Examiner’s Office is determining the victim’s cause of death. ••
