Free trees and recycling buckets

The Somerton Civic Association and MaST Community Charter School will hold a yard tree giveaway on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon at MaST, 1800 Byberry Road.

Participants can register for up to two trees. They must be planted in a yard, not roadside.

Recycling buckets and lids will also be available.

Arts festival on Saturday

Pennypack Environmental Center, 8600A Verree Road, will hold its annual fall festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festival will feature craftwork by local artisans, food, music and activities for the whole family.

Benefit to fight MS to be held Sunday

Keenan’s Krew will hold its sixth annual MS Coach Bingo to benefit the fight against multiple sclerosis on Sunday, Sept. 29, at St. Dominic’s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave.

Doors open at noon. Bingo is from 1 to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $30 a person (10 seats to a table).

Beer, wine, soda and coffee are provided. Guests are welcome to bring their own food and drinks. There will be raffle baskets and 50/50 tickets available to purchase along with extra bingo booklets and dabbers.

Lecture on ‘death railway’

Learn about the Bridge on the River Kwai and 600 other bridges on the 258-mile “death railway,” including stories of courage and heroism, on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave. The lecture will be presented by Walt Lafty.

Women can learn about religious life

The Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity, 3501 Solly Ave., will be hosting a discernment retreat day on Saturday, Sept. 28, for all women ages 18 or older who are considering religious life.

Join MSBT sisters for a day of prayer, activities, reflection and fellowship. Breakfast and lunch are included. A $15 donation is suggested.

KleinLife is going on the road

Travel with KleinLife kicks off with a fall foliage tour aboard a century-old restored railcar operated by the Colebrookdale Railroad, which will make a two-hour trip through the Secret Valley between Boyertown and Pottstown on Sunday, Oct. 27. The trip includes a full-course lunch at Boyertown’s Union Jack and roundtrip motorcoach transportation. The trip costs $115. Deadline for registration is Sept. 27.

Then it’s off to Broadway to enjoy a performance of the new musical production Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 10. The trip offers orchestra seating and roundtrip motorcoach transport to and from New York. Cost is $275. Deadline for reservations is Sept. 27.

Travel with KleinLife will enjoy a day in Atlantic City at Resorts Casino on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The trip features $10 in slots play, a ticket to see the musical show of vocalist John Ciotta and roundtrip motorcoach transportation. Cost is $28. Deadline for registration is Oct. 11.

The program will visit the National Museum of American Jewish History in Center City to take in the new exhibition of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, among other prominent museum exhibits, on Friday, Dec. 13. The trip includes admission to the museum and roundtrip motorcoach accommodations. Cost is $55. Deadline for registration is Nov. 1.

The Northeast High School Class of 1979 is celebrating its 40th reunion on Nov. 30, from 7 to 11 p.m. at The Fuge, 780 Falcon Circle, Warminister.

Liberty Bell Wanderers to host 5K/10K walk

On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Liberty Bell Wanderers Walking Club will host a 5K/10K walk through Langhorne. The walk will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The trail begins at the Heritage Farm, 222 N. Green St. in Langhorne.

The walk goes through the historic district, passing buildings dated as far back as 1793.

This event is free and open to the public. Participants do not need to be a member of the Liberty Bell Wanderers to participate. Participants must register and complete a start card to be returned at the finish.

History meeting on Oct. 2

The Northeast Philadelphia History Network will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. at Pennepack Baptist Church, 8732 Krewstown Road.

The topic will be Hannah Callowhill Penn, the second wife of William Penn.

The speaker will be author Kathy Clark.

The history group will also acknowledge the work of lifelong Wissinoming resident Elaine Peden in tirelessly advocating for and eventually obtaining honorary Pennsylvania and United States citizenship for William Penn and Hannah Penn in 1984. ••

Free cholesterol and blood pressure testing

Learn about your health with free cholesterol and blood pressure testing on Friday, Oct. 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave.

The testing is provided by Blue Cross.

Kensington alums set luncheon

The annual Kensington High School alumni luncheon will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 11:30 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel, 2400 Old Lincoln Highway, Trevose.

The luncheon is open to all Kensington High School alumni and their guests.

The honorees will be members of the classes of 1969 and ‘79, which are celebrating their 50th and 40th anniversaries, respectively.

The cost is $30.

Clothing drive on Oct. 12

The Marlyn Chakov Fein Chapter, Fox Chase Cancer Center is running a clothing drive on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The event will be held at 604 Township Line Road, Cheltenham, from 9 a.m. to noon.

People are asked to bring gently used clothing, accessories, books and small trinkets in bags or boxed for pick-up. The event supports cancer research and compassionate patient care. ••

Shop to support cancer research

The Marlyn Chakov Fein Chapter, Fox Chase Cancer Center is holding a “Shop To You Drop” extravaganza on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 2 to 8 p.m. at AFC Fitness, 1040 Mill Creek Drive, Trevose.

There will be clothes, jewelry, crafts and food vendors.

Donations are $5 in advance or $10 at the door.

Apply for school scholarship

Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia has opened applications for 2,000 new, need-based, K-8th grade scholarships for the 2020-21 school year.

On average, scholarship recipients receive $1,950 per year.

Applications will be accepted until March 1, 2020.

To be considered for priority lottery, apply by Nov. 15.

Annual Father Judge Crusader Classic 5K is Oct. 6

The 17th Annual Father Judge Crusader Classic 5K will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 9 a.m.

All proceeds will benefit the Firefighter Lt. Robert Neary Scholarship Fund at Father Judge. Neary, class of 1970, died in 2012 when the roof of a Kensington furniture store collapsed on him as he monitored the scene at a fire at an abandoned warehouse.

The entry fee is $30. The cost is $15 for youths 18 and under.

Race-day registration will take place in the Father Judge school yard beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Event T-shirts will be provided to all who pre-register (and to race-day registrants while supplies last).

The race will begin at the bandshell in Pennypack Park and continue along the banks of the Pennypack Creek and finish with a lap around the Father Judge track (behind the school). Medals will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age group.

Holy Innocents going to Atlantic City

Holy Innocents is planning a trip to the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City on Thursday, Oct. 3.

A bus will depart L Street and Hunting Park Avenue at 9 a.m. The bus will depart the Tropicana at 4:30 p.m.

The cost is $30. Riders will receive $25 in slot cash.

Big flea market on Oct. 5

A large VarageSale will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bethel Church parking lot, 903 Franklin Mills Circle.

The day will include new and used items, drinks and snacks. Spaces are $10 apiece. The lot opens at 5:30 a.m. for setup. The rain date is Oct. 12.

Barnett, Herremans in Mayfair Thursday

The Mayfair Business Improvement District will sponsor two events in coordination with Thursday’s game between the Eagles and Green Bay Packers.

There will be a pre-game tailgate party from 5 to 7 p.m. at Frankford and Cottman avenues. The WIP Go Birds podcast will be live, and visitors can get autographs and pictures with former Eagles receiver Fred Barnett.

Then, there will be a game-viewing party and Inside the Birds post-game podcast with Geoff Mosher, Adam Caplan and former Eagles lineman Todd Herremans at Chickie’s & Pete’s, 4010 Robbins Ave. The event starts at 7 p.m.. Tickets cost $25 and include an all-you-can-eat buffet and autographs and pictures with Herremans. ••

Help available for finances

M&T Bank and Operation HOPE are supporting financial empowerment with a new HOPE Inside office at M&T’s branch at 6500 Castor Ave. The office provides credit and money management and homeownership education through workshops and one-on-one coaching. Programs and services are available to individuals in the community regardless of whether they are M&T Bank clients.

The HOPE financial wellbeing coach provides financial education to help individuals better understand banking products, budget wisely, minimize debt, save and invest in their futures. Clients learn the basics of making a budget, how to read a credit report and what they can do to correct errors that may negatively affect credit ratings. The coaching also covers the client’s rights as a consumer and helps with understanding how to make the most of them. ••
