Dyslexia Awareness Month celebrated
State Rep. Ed Neilson (D-174th dist.) joined in a rally to highlight dyslexia and discuss H.R. 517, which designates October 2019 as “Dyslexia Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.
“This isn’t a partisan issue. Everyone wants kids to have the tools they need in order to learn how to read. We’ve run the pilot programs; we understand the issue and we know what we need to do. Our teachers need to be certified; they need to be trained and equipped with the tools that we know will help kids living with dyslexia. We need to identify these kids as soon as possible and get them exposed to the evidence-based intervention we know will help them deal with the challenges associated with dyslexia. This needs to happen at every single school throughout the commonwealth, no matter the ZIP code,” Neilson said.
Dyslexia is a neurological condition caused by a different wiring of the brain that affects people of all backgrounds and intellectual levels. There is no known cure for this condition, and individuals diagnosed must learn coping strategies. Research indicates that dyslexia has no relationship to intelligence, however it can make reading and comprehension more difficult.
People with dyslexia, or developmental reading disorder, experience problems confusing letters or learning what sounds go with certain letters; have trouble learning how to speak or determining the meaning of a simple sentence; and may have difficulty in correctly performing math operations or memorizing number facts. ••
Nazareth ranked high for STEM program
Newsweek included Nazareth Academy High School in its ranking of the top 5,000 STEM high schools for 2019, honoring excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Nazareth Academy was named in the top 8 percent nationally, coming in at No. 3,147 out of 37,100 high schools.
“Each and every day, our talented students, mentored by dedicated and caring faculty, demonstrate their leadership in STEM competencies, and Newsweek recognizes that with this distinction,” said principal Jim Meredith. “Whether it is their work in the classroom, or outside of the classroom with rocketry or robotics, our teachers are preparing our students to be virtuous leaders and embrace the challenges of the present while preparing for the jobs of tomorrow.” ••
