Read by 4th campaign seeks reading captains

Philadelphia’s Read by 4th campaign is looking for reading captains.

The citywide campaign encourages people to help children read on grade level by fourth grade.

The goal is to have a reading captain on every block in Philadelphia. Organizers want to start up reading captain trainings and meetings in the Northeast.

Fourth grade is considered the year when instruction shifts from learning to read to reading to learn.

Research has shown that all children are capable of making great strides in their reading ability as long as they have support from adults inside and outside the classroom. Read by 4th believes the key to achieving grade-level reading are school readiness, daily attendance, quality classroom instruction and out-of-school learning experiences.

To become a reading captain, call 215-814-4111. ••
