TBYN civic group weighs decision on Magee Avenue triplex

Take Back Your Neighborhood members put off a decision on a proposed triplex at 1147 Magee Ave. (at Summerdale Avenue).

The property has space for people to live in two apartments and a former doctor’s office.

However, a variance is needed to legalize the triplex. A Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing is scheduled for Dec. 12.

Neighbors plan a site visit before making a final decision on whether to support or oppose the proposal.

In other news from the Nov. 18 meeting:

• Lt. John Barker and community relations officer Mark Mroz, both of the 2nd Police District, addressed the crowd. Mroz thanked car dealer Gary Barbera for sponsoring an upcoming Christmas party for children. The officer urged residents to not put their Christmas bags on the seat of their cars while they continue shopping. Also, he encouraged residents to have neighbors take in delivered packages when they are not home so they are not stolen by “porch pirates.”

Police officer Marcus Allen, director of the Oxford Circle Police Athletic League center, said the facility offers free programs for kids ages 6-18. Programs include homework help, computers use, basketball and trips. Call 215-533-1395 or email M.Allen@phillypal.org.

• Two officials from the census said the information can be submitted by mail, online or over the phone. The census is hiring full-time and part-time recruiting assistants, field supervisors, office operations supervisors, enumerators and clerks. Hourly pay rates are $17 to $23. Apply at 2020census.gov/jobs or call 888-480-1639.

• Members enjoyed a birthday cake for state Rep. Jared Solomon, founder of Take Back Your Neighborhood. Solomon spent his birthday in Harrisburg.

• Take Back Your Neighborhood will meet again on Monday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. at Max Myers Playground, 1601 Hellerman St. Members are asked to bring food to share as part of a holiday celebration. A guest speaker will discuss the use of lights to celebrate holidays around the world. ••
