Rhawnhurst Civic OKs driveway

Rhawnhurst Civic Association voted to support a zoning application for a driveway and discussed an upcoming proposal for an apartment building.


Rhawnhurst Civic Association’s final meeting of the year was relatively quiet and lasted less than 30 minutes.

Residents voted unanimously to support a zoning application to build a driveway to park two cars at a home at 1869 Solly Ave. (at Loretto Avenue). A variance is needed because it would impede on a required setback.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment is scheduled to hear the case on March 18.

A much larger project is in the pipeline for a large grassy lot at Bustleton Avenue and Benson Street, Rhawnhurst Civic President Ken Kline told residents. A developer wants to build a 60-unit apartment building with 30 parking spaces at 2100 Benson St.

Kline said the proposal, which requires a variance, will be presented at a civic association meeting in the coming months. 

Neighbors at the Dec. 19 meeting also briefly discussed the potential traffic impact of a planned warehouse at the former Budd Company site, 1 Red Lion Road. As previously reported by the Times, early plans call for a 1.85-million-square-foot warehouse with 350 truck bays and 704 parking spaces that would operate 24/7.

Kline said there’s not much residents can do about the proposal, aside from raising money to hire an attorney.

The Rhawnhurst Civic Association’s next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Rhawnhurst Presbyterian Church, 7701 Loretto Ave. ••
