Weight Watchers donates to police, fire charity

Weight Watchers of Philadelphia Inc. recently recognized and honored the greatest individual department losers in the 33rd Battle of the Badges weight-loss competition between the Philadelphia Police and Fire departments.

Pictured with new Keurig Coffee Makers awarded by WW Philadelphia for the winners’ units are (from left) Capt. Christine McShea, commander of the 16th Police District; Detective Brian McCarthy, with South Detectives, who was the police department’s greatest loser; Fire Battalion Chief Anne Marie Lewandowski, accepting for Lt. Ed Manko, of Engine 22, at Academy and Comly roads, the fire department’s greatest loser; and John Birnhak, president of WW Philadelphia.

The police won this year’s contest and now lead 17-16 in the overall standings.

The total combined weight loss for both departments in 33 years of competition is 201,616.44 pounds.

WW Philadelphia has contributed $288,500 for college scholarships for children of police and firefighters killed or seriously injured in the line of duty in the name of the winning departments. ••
