Holmesburg Civic addresses neighborhood issues

The fenced-in parking lot of the former Sheffield Tavern

The Holmesburg Civic Association met last week on Zoom, discussing a proposed hair salon at Cottman Avenue and Walker Street and a car sales lot on the 4400 block of Holmesburg Ave.

Civic association president Tara Gontek said she is working with the office of City Councilman Bobby Henon about the former Sheffield Tavern at 4501 Sheffield Ave. The building is boarded up and has graffiti, and the parking lot is filled with trash and debris. Gontek said a moratorium on sheriff’s sales is slowing the process of finding a responsible owner.

As far as places to obtain a coronavirus vaccine, one recommendation was Deluxe Pharmacy, 8749 Frankford Ave.

The Holmesburg Fish & Game Protective Association, 5100 Pennypack St., remains open. For available activities, visit http://www.holmesburgfishandgame.com/home.html.

The Northeast Philadelphia History Network will hold a Zoom meeting on April 7, with guest speaker Allen Hornblum, author of The Klondike Bake-Oven Deaths, a nonfiction novel based on the true cooking of several Holmesburg Prison inmates in 1938. To receive the Zoom link, email [email protected].

Holmesburg Civic Association will meet on Zoom on Tuesday, April 13, at 7:15 p.m. Candidates for judge and district attorney will be invited to attend.
