- Firecrackers set off on Frankford Avenue
The Northeast Philadelphia Development Corporation, an Asian-American nonprofit, held a grand opening celebration last week for its new office at 7104 Frankford Ave. (at Princeton Avenue) in Mayfair.
Keith Xiao and Shawn Cheung are executive directors of the NPDC. The group’s goals include promoting Oriental culture and encouraging participation and furthering growth within the community.
The NPDC has been busy the last few years. Its events have included summer camps, community festivals, fan and diaper giveaways, community greening, a census workshop, voter registration, personal protective equipment distributions, helping businesses apply for coronavirus-related relief grants, vaccine information sessions and a partnership with Caring for Friends to give out food boxes to families in need.
City Councilman Bobby Henon presented the NPDC with a proclamation. He was joined by Councilwoman Helen Gym and Councilman Mark Squilla.
State Rep. Joe Hohenstein presented the nonprofit with a House citation, also signed by Reps. Kevin Boyle, Mike Driscoll and Mary Isaacson.
Henon, Gym, Squilla and Hohenstein helped cut a 30-foot-long ribbon, which was followed by firecrackers.
Also delivering remarks were city elections commissioner Lisa Deeley and Donny Smith, executive director of the Mayfair Business Improvement District.
The NPDC also received letters from U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle and former congressman Bob Borski. ••
