City Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sanchez and others on June 1 celebrated the recently completed upgrades at Carmella Playground, 2100 Wakeling St. in Frankford.

Sanchez was joined by Orlando Rendon, deputy commissioner of the city Department of Parks and Recreation; Barbara Pippet, secretary of the Carmella Playground Advisory Council; and Tim Savage, Democratic leader of the 23rd Ward.

Thanks was given to Carmella’s former and present recreation leaders, Kristin Hermann McKinley (now at Piccoli) and Elliott Hughes.

Improvements include new play equipment for ages 5-12, a sprayground, tree plantings, landscaping, tables, benches, hopscotch and an exercise track. The playground is best known for its popular skateboard park.

The cost was $636,000.

Sanchez noted that Carmella is the third Frankford playground recently renovated, following Deni and Simpson. ••
