Lawncrest civic members discuss zoning

The Lawncrest Community Association met last week, reviewing a couple of zoning cases.

The prospective owner of a property at 6324 Newtown Ave. has asked for a continuance of a case scheduled for the Zoning Board of Adjustment. LCA members oppose her plan for an eight-unit apartment complex.

A day care is proposed for 6520 Rising Sun Ave., with a ZBA hearing scheduled for early September.

In other news, the $12 million renovation to the Lawncrest Recreation Center is set to begin in May 2022. The work is expected to last at least a year, meaning the swimming pool could be closed in the summers of 2022 and 2023. It was closed last year due to the coronavirus and this summer for repairs. Lawncrest Library will get $2.8 million in improvements.

State Rep. Isabella Fitzgerald addressed the crowd.

Members held a moment of silence for Jim O’Mara, who recently died.

LCA leaders were re-elected in a show of hands. They are president Bill Dolbow, vice president Connie Whitfield, secretary Phil Grutzmacher and treasurer Heather Miller.

State Sen. Tina Tartaglione’s office, at 1061 Bridge St., is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Presentation BVM Elementary School, 105 Old Soldiers Road in Cheltenham, is accepting registrations. Call 215-379-3798 or visit presentationbvmschool.org.

The Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6500 Tabor Road, is hiring part-time security guards for weekend shifts. To schedule an interview, call Ted at 215-697-8045.

Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Thursday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at Monsignor James E. Mortimer Memorial Hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
