Bustleton Civic talks area properties

The Greater Bustleton Civic League last week held a Zoom meeting, discussing various properties in the neighborhood.

The GBCL is upset at a debris-filled vacant lot owned by PECO Energy at 9358 Old Bustleton Ave. President Jack O’Hara encouraged people to call 215-841-5471 or email michael.maronski@exeloncorp.com to complain.

“PECO has left a mess in our neighborhood,” O’Hara said.

In other news, members generally were in support of the proposed construction of a storage garage in the rear of a home on the 800 block of Welsh Road.

At its Oct. 26 meeting, also on Zoom, the GBCL will hear about the proposed conversion of an old house at 2000 Welsh Road into a property for retail sales, with a walk-in cooler. The Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing for that case is Nov. 17.

GBCL is appealing the city Department of Licenses and Inspections’ decision to allow UPS to build a distribution hub at 1 Red Lion Road. The hearing will resume on Oct. 12, at 9:30 a.m. Opponents cite concerns about traffic, lower home values and 24-hour, seven-day-a-week activity.

Abu Edwards, of the Committee of Seventy, discussed City Council redistricting. Edwards told the group his background includes working for Katie McGinty’s campaign for governor, David Wecht’s campaign for Supreme Court and as state director of Joe Biden’s “black male engagement.”

Bustleton is in the 10th Councilmanic District. After the 2010 census, there were 156,971 residents of the district. Today, there are 167,471.

Each of the 10 Council districts would have, ideally, 160,400 residents. However, map makers will accept up to a 10-percent difference between the largest and smallest districts. In other words, Council will create districts that will range from 152,400 residents to 168,400. ••
