Lappy coaching Phantoms

The Phantoms play in the American Hockey League.

Former Flyers player and assistant coach Ian Laperriere is in his first year as head coach.

The Phantoms played a shortened season in 2020-21, going 18-7-4, with one tie. No playoffs were held.

The season opens on Oct. 16. The team will play its first two games on the road until the home opener on Oct. 23. Home games feature promotions and giveaways.

Reading Royals are back

The Reading Royals, a Flyers affiliate since 2014, return to the ice after a year off.

The Royals, who compete in the East Coast Hockey League, suspended operations for the 2020-21 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2019-20, the Royals were 37-17-5-1 before the season was canceled following the COVID outbreak.

Home games are played at Santander Arena in downtown Reading, in Berks County.

The Royals open the season Oct. 22 at Norfolk before welcoming the Admirals for their home opener the following night. There are promotions throughout the season.

Tickets are available at royalshockey.com. ••

Back to an 82-game schedule

During the 2020-21 NHL season, played while the American/Canadian border was closed due to the coronavirus, the league realigned divisions to put all the Canadian teams into the same division. The Flyers played in the East Division.

Teams played a 56-game schedule and faced off only against division opponents in the regular season.

This season, the league has returned to the traditional 82-game schedule and the pre-pandemic division format, with the Flyers in the Metropolitan Division. Teams will play each other team at least twice.

The Seattle Kraken are new to the league and have been placed in the Pacific Division, with Arizona moving to the Central Division.

Below are this season’s division format:

Eastern Conference

Metropolitan Division: Flyers, Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh, Washington.

Atlantic Division: Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Toronto.

Western Conference

Central Division: Arizona, Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg.

Pacific Division: Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle, Vancouver, Vegas. ••
