Hall of Fame ceremony at Rivers

The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame will hold an induction ceremony and dinner reception on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at Rivers Casino’s Event Center, 1001 N. Delaware Ave.

Apply for LIHEAP grant

City Councilman Brian O’Neill announced that the 2021 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is now open to PGW customers. LIHEAP is a federal grant that helps income-eligible senior citizens and families pay their heating bills and restore gas service in the event of a shutoff. These grants range from $500 to $1,500, are available to both renters and homeowners, and do not have to be repaid. The award amount is based on household size and income.

Holy Innocents is running a casino trip to Caesars Atlantic City on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

A bus will depart L Street and Hunting Park Avenue at 9 a.m., and leave Caesars at 4:30 p.m.

JEVS will hold open houses for its Project WOW and IT Pre-Apprenticeship programs, which help low-income Philadelphia youth develop skills in building trades and information technology, every Monday and Wednesday in November at Orleans Technical College, 2770 Red Lion Road.

Ballots accepted Monday at prison

The city election commissioners announced that voters can submit completed absentee or mail-in ballots at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, 7901 State Road, on Monday, Nov. 1, from 4-6 p.m.

The election is on Tuesday, Nov. 2. ••

Learn drawing skills

Elements of Drawing, a four-part art series for active adults, will be offered at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., beginning on Thursday, Nov. 4. The public is invited to join with members.

In addition to Nov. 4, the program will run on Nov. 11 and 18 and Dec. 2. All will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Craft show at St. Hubert

The St. Hubert Alumnae Association is sponsoring a fall craft show on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the school cafeteria.

Literacy, goodies on Wednesday

Torresdale Playground, 9550 Frankford Ave., will hold a family literacy festival on Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The office of Councilman Bobby Henon will provide goodies, snacks and a literacy activity. The Dining Car will hand out Halloween cookies and goodies. Thunderbird Lanes will hold a raffle for a bowling party for five. Torresdale Library will give away school supplies and lanyards, offer literacy activities and provide a free book for anyone who signs up for a library card. The Friends of Torresdale Library and the Torresdale Playground Advisory Council will sponsor literacy games and activities and distribute prizes. ••

Farm stand open

The farm stand on the Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Campus is open Thursdays through Oct. 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Goods for sale include fresh fruits, vegetables, cage-free brown eggs, cheeses, apple butter, pumpkin butter and raw honey.

The stand is located next to Parking Lot C on campus grounds, 7600 Central Ave.

Buy car, help breast cancer awareness

Gary Barbera’s on the Boulevard, a Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram car dealership, is donating $50 to Fox Chase Cancer Center for every car sold during October as part of its “Kick Cancer to the Curb” program. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

About one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.

In 2021, an estimated 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in this country, along with 49,290 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer, according to breastcancer.org. ••

It’s Blockoween

The Block Gives Back will be holding Blockoween on Friday, October 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. on the 6700 and 6800 blocks of Torresdale Ave.

The street will be closed for the trunk-or-treat event. The Block Gives Back will be joined by the offices of state Rep. Joe Hohenstein and City Councilman Bobby Henon, nonprofits and local businesses to give out lots of free candy.

There will be bouncy houses, a DJ, movie night, a popcorn machine, pumpkin painting, carnival games and prizes for best dressed. ••

Celebrate Halloween

The Lawncrest Youth Council will hold its second annual Halloween celebration on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 4-8 p.m. at Trinity Church, Oxford, 601 Longshore Ave.

The event is co-hosted by state Sen. Tina Tartaglione, City Councilwoman Cherelle Parker and state Rep. Jared Solomon.

There will be a trunk or treat, music, arts and crafts, a costume contest, games and prizes.

Parade grand marshal named

Pat’s Music Center will be the grand marshal for the 44th Mayfair-Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade, which will take place on Sunday, Nov. 21, at noon on Frankford Avenue.

Shapiro should go

Former U.S. Attorney Bill McSwain, a Republican candidate for governor, is calling on the Philadelphia Inquirer to ask for the resignation of state Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a Democrat running for governor.

McSwain referenced a 2010 Inquirer editorial that called for Republican Attorney General Tom Corbett to resign while he ran for governor, citing a conflict of interest.

The Inquirer endorsed Democrat Dan Onorato in 2010, but he was defeated by Corbett. ••

Amazon hiring for the holidays

Amazon announced it will be hiring more than 3,900 in the Philadelphia area for seasonal jobs, including at its new warehouse at 2900 Grant Ave.

The jobs have an average starting pay of $18 per hour, sign-on bonuses up to $3,000 and an additional $3 per hour depending on shifts.

Jobs in Amazon’s operations network include stowing, picking, packing, shipping and delivering customer orders.
