Rhawnhurst’s Roland Scarinci was expecting Mission BBQ to deliver him lunch on Saturday, one day after the World War II veteran celebrated his 99th birthday.
Instead, Benson Street turned into a surprise block party for Scarinci, a Marine and accomplished harmonica player.
Organized by Mission BBQ’s Shannon Sperduto, the crowd gathered in the parking lot near Solly and the Boulevard and made the short drive to Scarinci’s house.
Among those participating were the state police, Philadelphia’s 7th district, SWAT and Highway Patrol [with Officer Andy Chan], Abington police, Mummers, motorcycle clubs, Marine Corps League and Marine recruiters, Police Explorers, the Phillie Phanatic, former Phillies second baseman Mickey Morandini, the Fire Department’s Engine 18, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Society and 5th Senate District representative Bob Stewart.
Warriors’ Watch Riders presented Scarinci with a blanket, a challenge coin and a star from an American flag.
Municipal Court President Judge Pat Dugan gave him a Veterans Court coin.
“The Greatest Generation is standing in front of me,” Dugan said.
State Rep. Ed Neilson and Councilman David Oh offered citations.
The crowd sang Happy Birthday and the Marines’ Hymn [The Halls of Montezuma].
“I’m forever grateful,” Scarinci said. “This is one of the greatest days of my life.”
Scarinci’s wife, Gloria, died on Feb 1, a day after they celebrated their 74th anniversary.
“She’s looking down and trying to say thank you for what you’re doing for my husband,” Scarinci said. ••
