St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Sunday, March 13, starting at 11 a.m. at 16th Street and JFK Boulevard.

Before the parade, a Mass will be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, at 20th and Locust streets.

The parade will go around City Hall and east on Market Street, with the performing area between 5th Street and 6th Street. The parade theme is 250 Years of Faith, Family, Friendship and Heritage. The grand marshal is Michael J. Bradley Jr. The parade will be broadcast live by Channel 3. ••

All aboard the Erin Express

The Erin Express will take place on Saturday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The bus schedule is 2-8 p.m. at the following bars: Paddy Whacks Irish Sports Pub, Curley’s Pub, O’Mare’s Irish Pub, Union Tap, Reedy’s Tavern, King’s Highway Tavern, Leneghan’s Crusader Inn, Penny Gardens Tavern and Celtic Cross Tavern.

There will be drink specials. You must be 21 to ride the bus and enter bars. The cost is $6 for a wristband, $15 for a T-shirt and $5 for a logo cup [with one free beer], or $20 for the wristband, shirt, cup and a beer.

Learn about founding mothers

“Founding Mothers” will be the main subject of a five-part course presented by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of Widener University in cooperation with KleinLife. The course is open to members and the public and will be conducted on Zoom on March 14, 21 and 28 and April 4 and 11, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Boyle votes for veterans bill

U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle voted for passage of H.R. 3967, the Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act, which will treat toxic exposure as a cost of war by addressing the full range of issues impacting toxic-exposed veterans, including access to earned benefits and healthcare through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“When we sent our servicemembers into harm’s way, we made a promise that we would take care of them when they came home,” Boyle said. “Today, I voted yes on the bipartisan Honoring our PACT Act to keep my promise and ensure all veterans exposed to toxic substances during their service can access the care and benefits they’ve earned.”

The Act is a legislative package that will open up healthcare to over 3.5 million veterans exposed to toxic substances during their military service. It will create presumptions for 23 respiratory illnesses and cancers, shifting the burden of proof off veterans. ••

Rhawnhurst Civic to meet

A state official will discuss fraud, and a Philadelphia police officer will talk about crime.

Apply for high school art program

Glen Foerd’s Teen Arts Program is accepting applications for the spring semester. The program is open to eight high school students and will take place after school each Monday at Glen Foerd, 5001 Grant Ave., from March 28 through May 16, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Deadline for applications is March 13, 2022. All participants will have the opportunity to create original projects and will receive a $250 stipend for their involvement in the program. Art program at Glen Foerd

Glen Foerd, 5001 Grant Ave., is accepting applications for its 2022-2023 Artists in Residence program. The categories are visual artist, performing artist and teaching artist. Artists should be residing in the greater Philadelphia area at the time of their application. Deadline for submissions is March 15 at 11 p.m. The application fee is $10 and is non-refundable. Artists in Residence will have from June 1, 2022 until May 31, 2023, to complete their residencies. Selected artists will create works that engage Glen Foerd’s audience and collections, which includes architecture, material culture, art and natural landscapes. This opportunity offers area artists access to Glen Foerd’s historic collections, grounds and the Delaware River. Artistic projects that challenge dominant historical narratives by focusing on social issues such as environmental conservation, wealth inequality, race and industrialization are encouraged. Each selected artist (or group, if applying jointly) will receive a $3,000 stipend.

St. Hubert day trip

St. Hubert will hold its seventh annual summer fun day trip on Tuesday, June 21. There will be a one-hour ride on a cruise ship, followed by a four-hour stay at Resorts casino, with $10 back in slot cash. The day will end at the Tomasello winery for a sitdown dinner and complimentary wine tasting.

Sign up for senior softball

Philadelphia Senior Softball League is looking for experienced players for their 58 and over league. The season starts mid-April and runs through September. Donate to Ukraine

U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, co-chairman of the Ukraine Caucus, is partnering with local nonprofits to deliver medical supplies, toiletries and other necessary items to be sent to Ukraine. Fitzpatrick encourages donations to the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee, 1206 Cottman Ave. Donations that can be dropped off are linens (towels, sheets, blankets), hand and feet warmers, medical supplies (bloodstop powder, bandages), personal hygiene items, knee pads and newly packaged undergarments and socks. ••

Helping cervical cancer patients

Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Suzanne M. Miller, a professor in the Cancer Prevention and Control research program, has received a two-year research grant from the Prevent Cancer Foundation to support a project designed to test whether text messaging can effectively reduce urban cervical cancer disparities.

When cervical cancer is diagnosed early and appropriately treated, the likelihood of survival is close to 100 percent, Miller said. However, only about 50% of urban, “underserved” women receive the recommended follow-up care, called colposcopy, after an abnormal cervical cancer screening result.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation grant award came from the Marcia and Frank Carlucci Charitable Foundation. ••

Targeting Shoot First laws

State Rep. Jason Dawkins is joining a new task force made up of state legislators, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action, all committed to combating laws that promote Shoot First, or Stand Your Ground.

Dawkins claims that Shoot First laws essentially make murder legal and put “people of color” at risk of racist violence and violence fueled by “implicit bias.”

Dawkins said research now shows that Shoot First laws have resulted in 700 additional gun deaths every year across the country. ••

Bingo on Saturday

Wells Fargo helping Ukraine effort

Wells Fargo announced $1 million in donations across three nonprofits to enable humanitarian aid for Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees as well as support services for U.S. service members and their families across the globe. The funding goes to the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen and the USO. In addition, Wells Fargo is making it easier for its employees to support these organizations through its internal employee-giving system. ••

Tarken hosting adult art club

Tarken Recreation Center, 6250 Frontenac St., hosts an adult art club, which meets on Tuesdays, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., through April 5. Practice and discuss painting and drawing: still life, portraits, figure drawing, abstract art and illustrations. The program will conclude with a spring art show on April 14 for members to show off their work. No experience necessary.
