Become a city lifeguard
The city Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for lifeguards to staff free public pools. Training is provided. The lifeguard position pays a wage of $15.25 to $17.24 an hour. Red Cross certification classes are free for anyone ages 16-24 who commit to working at a city pool. The lifeguard screening test requires candidates to swim 300 meters nonstop, tread water for two minutes and retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the deep end. Candidates can make an appointment for free training or to take the lifeguard screening at phila.gov/lifeguards. Support charity basketball tourney
The Lace Up for Lisa men’s 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament will take place on May 15 at the Bustleton Bengals’ John Marynowitz Gym, 9945 President St.
The cost is $100 for a team of three or four. The deadline to sign up is April 25.
The tournament will be played in memory of Lisa Dombrowski, who died last June. Proceeds will benefit Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center.
Dombrowski’s husband, Gary, and daughter, Nicole, are organizing the tournament. A Cardinal Dougherty graduate, she loved sports and competition. Lisa’s infant granddaughter, Lisa May Marie, will be there.
The Bengals are donating the gym, and some PIAA referees are donating their time. The public is invited. There will be raffles, a DJ, T-shirt sales and concession stand. T-shirt sponsors will be accepted until April 25.
The briefing for the tournament begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the games at 8.

Fairness in Women’s Sports Act advances
The state House Education Committee approved the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. Rep. Martina White is one of the prime sponsors.
House Bill 972 would protect opportunities for women and girls in athletics by ensuring women are not forced to compete against biological males playing on women’s sports teams.
“Having separate teams for men and women is the time-tested way to ensure everyone has the opportunity to showcase their talents and be champions,” White said. “Just imagine how a young woman feels when missing out on a spot on a team to a biological male. She loses more than just an opportunity. She loses potential friendships, competitive opportunities and life lessons gained through being part of a team. House Bill 972 supports every young girl’s athletic pursuit.”
Under the bill, an athletic team or sport designated for females, women or girls may not be open to students of the male sex. In addition, a student deprived of an athletic opportunity or who suffers direct or indirect harm as a result of a violation of this act by a college or public school would be able to bring a cause of action for injunctive relief, psychological and physical damage, and the costs involved in filing a lawsuit against the college or high school.
The bill passed the committee by a vote of 15-9, with Republicans in favor and Democrats opposed. It now moves to the full House for consideration. ••

Judge/St. Hubert Junior Night
The Guidance Departments of Father Judge and St. Hubert high schools will hold a Junior Night on Wednesday, April 6, from 7-9 p.m. in the auditorium of Judge, 3301 Solly Ave. A panel of college admissions and trade/technical representatives will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. Everyone is welcome, but all 11th-grade students and their parents are encouraged to attend. Women’s health event on Friday
The Breast Cancer Screening and Women’s Health Community Event will take place on Friday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the future site of Temple Health’s women’s hospital, 1331 E. Wyoming Ave. It will include free health screenings for women as well as information about women’s health, smoking cessation, breast health, hypertension, diabetes, lung health, nutrition and colon cancer. Mammograms will be offered inside the Fox Chase Cancer Center Mobile Screening Unit at no cost to women. Walk to prevent suicide
