Trees to beautify Settlement Music School

Settlement Music School’s Kardon-Northeast Branch participated in the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s tree-planting initiative on Saturday morning. The Northeast Tree Tenders planted three eastern redbud (cercis canadensis) trees on the site at 3745 Clarendon Ave.

In celebration of Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 29), PHS and 82 Tree Tenders groups plan to plant more than 1,550 trees in the Philadelphia area.

Matthew Clayton, Kardon-Northeast branch director, was on hand for the plantings. He and board members believe the trees will serve as a welcoming facade and add to the site’s curb appeal.

Settlement, which bills itself as a community school, is accepting new students and offers financial aid. No auditions necessary. The teachers are certified and have strong educational and performance backgrounds. Call 215-320-2620 or visit settlementmusic.org.

Linda Grutzmacher, who heads Northeast Tree Tenders, explained that street and yard tree plantings are done once in the spring and once in the fall, typically the Saturdays near Earth Day and before Thanksgiving. The group also offers follow-up trimming and cleaning up and tips to homeowners. Trees should get about 20 gallons of water a week for the first two years.

Northeast Tree Tenders members are trained. To join or to sign up for up to three free trees, go to TreeNortheast.org. ••
