Glen Foerd names artists
Glen Foerd named its 2022-23 Artists in Residence. This year’s artists are visual artist Sarah Peoples, performing artist Alex Tatarsky and teaching artists Marcellus Armstrong and Marvin Edwards.
Glen Foerd’s Artists in Residence program, established in 2014, in partnership with Past Present Projects, is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
With a stipend of $3,000, the Artists in Residence will create works that engage Glen Foerd’s audience and collections that include architecture, material culture, art and natural landscapes. This opportunity offers area artists access to Glen Foerd’s historic collections, grounds and the Delaware River and allows each artist to focus on social issues such as environmental conservation, “wealth inequality,” race and industrialization. ••
PA Senate passes Fairness in Women’s Sports Act
The state Senate passed the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, SB 1191, which would ensure that sports are separated by biological sex. The bill will now go to the House of Representatives for consideration. The vote was 30-20. It was supported by 28 Republicans, one independent and one Democrat. Sens. Tina Tartaglione and Jimmy Dillon voted against it. It was Dillon’s first vote after taking office on June 7. At a debate last month, he declared “I would completely be for it,” in response to a question about the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. Yet, he voted against it.
“It is encouraging to see leaders stand up to preserve the hard-won opportunities gained for women athletes through Title IX almost 50 years ago. The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act will defend a fair playing field for female athletes,” said Alexis Sneller, of the Pennsylvania Family Council.
Recent polling by Spry Strategies for the Women’s Liberation Front and the American Principles Project reported nearly 75% of Pennsylvanians support protecting women’s sports by keeping it separated based on biological sex. ••
