2nd PDAC talks crime, community events

Community relations officer Mark Mroz provided a crime update at last week’s 2nd Police District Advisory Council meeting, held at the 2nd district, 7306 Castor Ave.

Mroz discussed an arrest of a DoorDash driver after he allegedly shot a 17-year-old Chick-fil-A employee in the leg after a dispute over a milkshake at the store on the 800 block of Adams Ave.

Mroz also spoke of the murder of a 14-year-old boy outside 890 Bridge St. He said the victim was enrolled at Woodrow Wilson Middle School. A GoFundMe page has been set up to pay for the funeral for Bobby Yocum. Police believe they are making progress identifying a suspect, who also shot a 15-year-old girl in the eye.

The state has provided money to reopen a Police Athletic League center at Rising Sun and Longshore avenues, but the required matching funds have not followed.

On a brighter note, a free community health fair will take place on Thursday, June 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1919 Cottman Ave. There will be testing for vision, body mass index, blood pressure and Hepatitis B, along with COVID-19 testing kits. Contact event coordinator Pearl Huynh at 215-839-6108 or [email protected].

State Rep. Kevin Boyle will hold a senior fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, June 24, at Fox Chase Recreation Center, 7901 Ridgeway St. A variety of constituent services will be available, including help with local and state government programs, and a free lunch will be provided. Call 215-695-1016.

There will be fireworks on July 4 at 9:15 p.m. at Lawncrest Recreation Center, Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street.

National Night Out will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 6-8 p.m. at the Fox Chase Elementary School yard, 500 Rhawn St. A bicycle ride will begin at 5:30.

State Sen. Tina Tartaglione will hold book bag giveaways at 1 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Lawncrest Recreation Center, and Sept. 1 at Wissinoming Park, 5801 Frankford Ave. Children must be accompanied by parents.

State Rep. Jared Solomon will hold a town hall meeting on Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon, at PATH, 1919 Cottman Ave., to discuss the possible extension of the Subway along Roosevelt Boulevard.

The 2nd PDAC will meet again on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. ••
