Nazareth joining Catholic League
The Catholic League Board of Governors has voted to accept Nazareth Academy as its newest member, beginning with the 2023-24 school year.
Nazareth is grateful to principal James Meredith for his leadership and guidance on a thorough presentation to the board and to athletic director Dan Bradley for his work during the application process.
“Steeped in tradition and true to its Catholic mission for over 100 years, the Philadelphia Catholic League is one of the most respected leagues in Pennsylvania and provides Nazareth Academy student-athletes the opportunity for increased exposure to showcase their talents while enhancing the school’s commitment and identity as a Catholic, independent school for girls. This move to the PCL also allows our teams to build upon existing rivalries within the league setting. We embrace the rich history of the PCL and are excited for Nazareth Academy student-athletes to add to its story,” Meredith said.
Archbishop Ryan principal Joseph McFadden, president of the PCL board, said, “The Philadelphia Catholic League is thrilled to welcome Nazareth Academy as a new member. Their commitment to the student-athlete experience, strong familiarity with current PCL schools and on-campus facilities will further strengthen one of the best leagues in the entire state. I commend my colleagues for their work during this very comprehensive and deliberate process.” ••

Disabilities to be taught in K-12 curriculum
Disability inclusive curriculum will be incorporated into Pennsylvania’s Education Code, after the House and Senate overwhelmingly passed H.B. 1642 and Gov. Tom Wolf signed it.
State Reps. Joe Hohenstein and Jason Ortitay introduced legislation that would encourage disability inclusive curriculum in schools across the state.
The legislation sets up a three-year pilot in schools to test out the curriculum followed by a statewide rollout once approved by the state and disabled people. It promises that the curriculum will be created by organizations at least 50% controlled by disabled people.
Pennsylvania will be the first state to introduce disability into the curriculum in this comprehensive way. Alan Holdsworth, director of Disability Equality in Education, said, “This is landmark legislation, and DEE cannot wait to work with the Department of Education in creating and testing a disability-led curriculum.”
Disability Equality in Education has a website – https://www.disabilityequalityeducation.org/ – of lessons and other resources that were vetted by disabled people that teachers are freely accessing.
Bridesburg resident Lisa Aquilla said, ”I want to thank my state representative, Joe Hohenstein, and his colleague, Rep. Jason Ortitay, for their wonderful support. I was only a pebble in the water and I made a ripple to start the process but it’s collectively that we will make a wave. Thank you for recognizing and valuing the voices of our community and coalition as the important key that turns this tide.” ••

Nazareth bariatric accredited

“MBSAQIP accreditation reflects a ‘gold standard’ of bariatric care,” Cheeyandira said. “Patients considering weight-loss surgery can feel confident in choosing Nazareth Hospital. They will receive skilled, compassionate care that meets the highest national safety and quality standards.”
To earn MBSAQIP Accreditation, Nazareth met essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure and patient care pathways, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its surgical outcomes and identifying opportunities for quality improvement.
Dr. Michael Magro Jr., president of Nazareth, said, “Our bariatrics team and hospital administrators worked tirelessly through every part of the MBSAQIP’s rigorous process. Now our job is to continue reporting outcomes, participate in regular program evaluations, meet safety requirements, and improve our processes to provide the very best bariatric care possible to our patients.”
“I am proud to lead Nazareth Hospital’s bariatric program,” Cheeyandira said. “We change lives, and it’s proved when our patients come back to us with more confidence, a healthier lifestyle and just enjoying life again. It brings us immeasurable joy.” ••
