Four elected officials and an incoming lawmaker volunteered on Monday at Caring for Friends, 12271 Townsend Road, packaging Thanksgiving meals of turkey, stuffing, gravy and green beans.

Caring for Friends was hoping to deliver 10,000 Thanksgiving meals to senior citizens and the homeless.

“The demand this year is more than ever before,” said CEO Vince Schiavone.

City Councilman Mike Driscoll, state Sen. Jim Dillon, city elections commissioner Lisa Deeley, state Rep. Joe Hohenstein and state Rep.-elect Pat Gallagher were part of the massive volunteer effort this Thanksgiving season, helping seniors and others dealing with the high costs of food enjoy a Turkey Day meal.

Taylor Daukaus, chief of staff to Councilwoman Katherine Gilmore Richardson, was also among the volunteers, along with Dillon aide Matt Darragh.

Schiavone said Caring for Friends (founded as Aid for Friends by his mom, Rita, in 1974) benefits when area elected officials work together on behalf of the charity. He said, during the pandemic, elected officials heard from more needy constituents than ever before.

The elected officials loaded up their cars with turkeys, all the fixings and pumpkin pies to distribute to constituents. ••
