Acclaimed artist comes to Protestant Home

James Dupree

Artist and educator James Dupree displayed some of his work last week during a Black History Month presentation at the Philadelphia Protestant Home.

PPH residents and others also watched a slideshow with many more of his creations.

Dupree is a Pittsburgh native who moved to Philadelphia in 1957 and grew up in South Philadelphia. He’s a graduate of Penn’s Master of Fine Arts program. He’s taught since 1979 and has received both fellowships and artist’s residencies in Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and Wales.

Today, he lives in New Hope and has galleries at 6th and Bainbridge streets and at 10 N. Union St. in Lambertville, New Jersey. He is among 18 artists showcasing pieces through Feb. 26 in Lambertville. There will be an opening reception on Feb. 11, from 5-8 p.m. For more information on the Lambertville exhibition, call 640-203-8356 or email [email protected].

In addition, he has sold some of his pieces and has works that have been shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Dupree told the PPH crowd that he hopes to build an artist’s residency program. ••
