The Lawncrest Community Association last week welcomed a number of speakers at its monthly meeting.

Representing the 2nd Police District were Capt. Marc Metellus, Lt. Joe Mortimer and community relations officer Mark Mroz.

Also addressing the crowd was Christy Brady, a Fox Chase resident and Democratic candidate for city controller. Brady, who has the party endorsement and plenty of union support, is a CPA who worked 28 years in the controller’s office. She was named acting controller by Mayor Jim Kenney after Rebecca Rhynhart resigned to run for mayor, but had to resign herself to run to complete Rhynhart’s term.

Residents also complained to a Philadelphia Parking Authority representative on issues such as illegal tractor trailer parking and double parking next to bump-outs built to capture stormwater.

The Lawncrest Recreation Center has been closed since January due to a lack of heat. The city will not fix the problem, as renovations are coming next year to the rec center. Renovations to Lawncrest Library will begin before the end of the year and be finished in 2024.

In other news, state Rep. Anthony Bellmon and state Sen. Tina Tartaglione will hold Staying Strong, Determined and Healthy, a Women’s History Month event, on March 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at Fit Moms of Philly, 6036 Colgate St. There will be service and resources focused on women’s physical and mental health.

The Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Thursday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m. at St. William’s Monsignor James E. Mortimer Memorial Hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
