Corporal John Loudenslager American Legion Post 366 is looking for an experienced baseball coach. The team was coached for three decades by former Phillies catcher Bennie Culp, who produced stars such as Joe Bonikowski, a Father Judge graduate (class of 1959) who went on to pitch for the Minnesota Twins. In the 1980s, standouts included Northeast High’s Jesse Levis, Howie Freiling and Dan O’Rourke, Penn Charter’s Ruben Amaro Jr. and Frankford High’s Bobby Higginson.

White condemns weekend mob

Rep. Martina White released the following statement after crowds attacked police in their vehicles Sunday in Philadelphia:

“The attacks on our law enforcement officers over this weekend were despicable and should never be tolerated in the city of Philadelphia or anywhere in this commonwealth. I want the city, the mayor, the police commissioner and our law enforcement officers to know I will gladly advocate for state resources necessary to assist with the prevention of these acts and the capture of those who committed them.

“Law-abiding citizens are sick of these criminals walking our streets and acting without fear of punishment. It is time for criminals in Philadelphia to once again understand that if you commit criminal acts you will be caught, you will be prosecuted and you will have the full force of our justice system brought down upon you. This type of lawlessness must end and the time for peace and justice is now.” ••

Get screened for head, neck cancer

Physicians from Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Temple Head & Neck Institute will offer free screenings for head and neck cancer on Thursday, April 6, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The screenings are open to everyone, take less than 10 minutes, and no appointment is needed. Somerton Civic meeting Tuesday

Somerton Civic Association will meet on April 11, beginning at 7 p.m., at 1290 Southampton Road, the Walker Lodge of the I.O.O.F. Representatives from the city Department of Streets will discuss upcoming roadwork in Somerton that will impact traffic on Byberry Road and Red Lion Road. Boyle backs preventive care

State Rep. Kevin Boyle is introducing legislation that requires health insurers to cover preventative health care services without cost-sharing. Boyle acted after a judge in Texas struck down part of the Affordable Care Act that gave Americans access to no-cost or low-cost preventative health care. Appeals are expected.

“I believe every Pennsylvanian should have access to life-saving preventative health care without having to pay a copay, coinsurance or deductible,” Boyle said. “Ensuring access to preventative health care just makes sense — preventative care saves lives and money. I want to make sure what this judge ruled in Texas does not end up taking away necessary preventative care for millions of Pennsylvanians.” ••

Sports Hall of Fame banquet at FOP

The City All Star Chapter Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 29th awards banquet on Tuesday, April 18, at 5:30 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.

The class of 2023 consists of former North Catholic soccer coach Jerry Brindisi; former Northeast High football coach Harvey “Brew” Schumer; Frank “Roscoe” Natale, who has coached baseball and been athletic director at Southern and Bok and been football coach at Bok, Bartram and Southern; and former La Salle University and Archbishop Ryan baseball coach Mike Lake.

In addition, the class of 2020 will be recognized. The banquet honoring them was postponed due to COVID.

Those inductees are former La Salle University basketball player Craig Conlin; coach and youth league organizer Lou DeCree; retired longtime women’s college basketball official Dennis DeMayo; Division I football official Joe Griesser; Joe Hand, a leading TV distributor of closed-circuit and pay-per-view boxing; Mike Hawkins, the PIAA District 12 chairman and former football coach and athletic director at Germantown High School; Steve Kane, the longtime former boys basketball coach at University City who led the Jaguars to the 1995 Public League title; Mike Koplove, who pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cleveland Indians; Kathy Lonergan, a Division I women’s basketball referee; Dave Mastropietro, a baseball star at La Salle University; and Dr. Anthony Salem, a former minor league baseball player.

Tickets cost $75 in advance and $80 at the door. Tables of 10 cost $750.

Checks can be made payable to Philadelphia City All Star Chapter, and mailed to PAHOF, P.O. Box 672, Levittown, PA 19055-9998 (include email address and inductee name on check). No paper tickets will be issued. Instead, guests will go to a welcome table at the FOP to get their seat assignments.

The Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council’s All Star Labor Classic basketball game will be played Sunday, April 16, at Holy Family University, 9801 Frankford Ave. Proceeds will benefit the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The event pits the City Boys vs. Suburban Boys at 2:45 p.m. and the City Girls vs. Suburban Girls teams at 1:15. Location change for Roosevelt Mall flea market

As the Roosevelt Mall prepares for a major makeover, including construction of a supermarket, the flea market that is open every Sunday in the lower parking lot of the mall will relocate to the lot near Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard, by Macy’s. The Marlyn Chakov Fein Chapter, Fox Chase Cancer Center is running a casino trip to Caesars Atlantic City on Tuesday, April 18. The cost is $40 and includes round-trip motor coach and $20 in slot dollars. Temple Health opened its first Obstetrics/Gynecology outpatient practice on its new Women & Families campus at 1331 E. Wyoming Ave. Seven of Temple Health’s OB/GYN physicians and their staff members will provide outpatient gynecologic and obstetrical care. They will also offer a wide range of outpatient surgical procedures. There will also be a range of on-site radiology services, from ultrasound to X-ray, MRI, digital mammography and nuclear medicine. ••

Televised mayoral forum

The Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a mayoral forum on Tuesday, April 18, in the gym at Holy Family University.
