The 2nd Police District Advisory Council met last week before breaking for the summer.
Mark Mroz, the community relations officer, said all 21 police districts were given 112 steering wheel locks apiece by Hyundai and Kia to give to drivers who own 2011-19 models of those vehicles. Car thieves have been targeting Hyundais and Kia.
Mroz also mentioned a June 12 shooting on the 6300 block of Montour St. Two males, 15 and 20, were shot in the leg. Both were transported to Einstein Hospital in stable condition. Police believe the 15-year-old was the intended target back in March when another 15-year-old was shot to death in the Oxford Village housing project. The surviving 15-year-old is not cooperating with police.
Meanwhile, there will be no fireworks or any kind of celebration on July 4 in Lawncrest, due, in part, to a lack of volunteers. State Sen. Tina Tartaglione secured a $25,000 grant for fireworks, but the money will not be available in time for Lawncrest leaders to coordinate planning with the police department.
Tartaglione will hold a community day at Lawncrest Recreation Center on Wednesday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be water ice, pretzels, music and school backpack giveaways.
The 2nd and 7th police districts will hold a leisurely community bike ride on Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 5 p.m. at Fox Chase Elementary School, 500 Rhawn St. All riders will be entered into a drawing for a free new bike at 5:30.
The 2nd PDAC will meet on Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Philadelphia Protestant Home. ••
