City Council presented a citation to Crestmont Farms resident JoAnn Yerkov, who retired last week after teaching for more than 40 years in Philadelphia.
Yerkov attended St. Katherine of Siena Grade School and Archbishop Ryan High School, then earned a degree in business management from Peirce College.
At Holy Family College, she graduated with a degree in elementary education, then received a master’s in education with an elementary education specialization from Cabrini College.
Yerkov began her teaching career at St. Leo the Great Catholic School in 1981, remaining for eight years and teaching literacy, math, science, computer science, art and music in fourth and sixth grades. She was Math Department chairwoman, Extended Day coordinator, Sacramental Program director, missions coordinator and cheerleading coach.
Yerkov went on to teach for 10 years at Nazareth Academy Grade School, where she was also Math Enrichment program director, Summer Academic Camp director and Field Day coordinator.
During her time at Nazareth Academy Grade School, she had the opportunity to teach both of her sons, Robert and Michael.
Yerkov moved on to teach at J.H. Brown Elementary School, where she was also math teacher leader, Math Professional Development coordinator and Math Challenge 24 director.
Outside the classroom, Yerkov has served on the Nazareth Academy Grade School Board of Trustees and the Torresdale Women’s Committee, and volunteers at St. Katherine of Siena Church and Aid for Friends.
She has been married to Robert Yerkov for 39 years, They have two sons, Robert Jr. and Michael, and a puppy, Lola. They enjoy vacationing in Margate, New Jersey and Key West, Florida. ••
