GBCL will continue the fight

The Greater Bustleton Civic League last week voted unanimously to approve a new directors and officers insurance policy.

The previous policy was not renewed by the insurer after the GBCL was sued by Relteva, which owns the property at 1 Red Lion Road, the proposed future home of a UPS sorting facility.

GBCL is appealing the granting of building and zoning permits to Commonwealth Court, with a hearing expected next year.

Opponents cite traffic as the main reason they don’t want the facility built.

The group used to pay $450 a year for directors and officers insurance. Jack O’Hara, president of GBCL, was able to find a new policy after being rejected by many insurers, allowing the group to continue to operate. The new policy costs $5,584 a year, with a $10,000 deductible.

The GBCL has $24,273.60 in its account.

In other news from the June 27 meeting:

• Gary Masino, Democratic candidate in the 10th Councilmanic District, addressed the crowd. One man criticized O’Hara for allowing Masino to speak at a special meeting that was billed as centering solely on the attempt to find directors and officers insurance. O’Hara said he invited O’Neill and told him Masino would be appearing. Masino and O’Neill aide Madonna Duffy got into a brief disagreement on O’Neill’s whereabouts. Duffy said O’Neill was at a meeting at Calvary Athletic Association regarding a zoning matter on Abby Road.

Masino said he is married with five kids. He’s been business manager of Sheet Metal Workers Local 19 for 15 years. He said he used to be friends with O’Neill but became frustrated because he hasn’t heard back from the councilman after more recent outreach. Masino said he believes taxes are too high and that the city needs more police officers, saying the FOP told him the city needs 2,000 more cops.
