City Councilman Brian O’Neill and Orlando Rendon, interim commissioner of the Department of Parks and Recreation, were joined by Mitchell staff and summer campers.

The cost was $782,000 for a new splash pad, furnishings, landscaping, plantings and playground equipment.

The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale made a $35,000 donation that went to a shaded picnic patio in the center of the playground, along with a flagpole and American flag. O’Neill thanked Jeff McFadden, Union League general manager, for the donation.

Rendon recognized former Mitchell leaders Steve Schmidt and Jerry Boligitz, and O’Neill thanked the current staff for keeping Mitchell looking brand new.

The councilman described Mitchell, built in 1968, as a “really special place.”

“This is as good as it gets, as far as I’m concerned,” he said. ••
