Library renovations
Lawncrest Library, 6098 Rising Sun Ave., will close on Friday, Aug. 4, for renovations, as part of the city’s Rebuild program. The nonprofit Community Ventures is managing the project. The $3.4 million in renovations will include a new computer, teen and soft-seating area; glass-enclosed meeting rooms; kitchenette in the community room; ADA ramp to the front entrance and ADA restroom; HVAC, electric and plumbing; windows, furniture, flooring, lighting and paint throughout; and improved pathways and landscaping. Lawncrest patrons are being encouraged to visit Bushrod, Fox Chase, Northeast Regional and Greater Olney libraries. Construction will begin in September, and will take about 10 months. Then, staff will return to stock the library, which should reopen in the fall of 2024. Meanwhile, Community Ventures is managing the renovations of Lawncrest Recreation Center, which will close next spring and reopen in the summer of 2025. ••
Free tablets for Afghans
A number of Afghan refugee families received free tablet devices during a recent storytime event at Northeast Regional Library. The devices were distributed as part of the pilot program Family Literacies and Community Connections, established to help connect refugee families to library services and other resources. An anonymous donor helped fund the program, which hired four members of the local Afghan community as Community Connectors to introduce the library and its services to new residents. Some 125 tablets were given to each school-age child and one adult per household. ••
English classes for Ukrainians
Holy Family University’s English as a Second Language initiative for newly arrived Ukrainian adults is accepting new applicants. The classes are free and open to members of the community who are at least 18 years old. Classes are at 9801 Frankford Ave. and online. Class days and times are online (through Aug. 24, Tuesday and Thursday, 6-7 p.m.) and in person (through July 31, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m.). Term limits
State Rep. Jared Solomon is introducing legislation that would require Pennsylvania to apply to Congress for an Article V Convention to establish and set term limits on U.S. Supreme Court Justices and members of Congress. Under the United States Constitution, for an Article V Convention to take place, two-thirds of the states must apply to Congress to propose amendments to the U.S. Constitution on the same issue. So far, 19 other states have applied.
“The Supreme Court needs a major cleanup,” Solomon said. “Public opinion polling shows that support for the Supreme Court is at its lowest ever and a strong majority of voters across party lines want term limits for Supreme Court Justices and members of Congress.” ••

Support for small nonprofits
A Little Better Company, an agency focused on making the world a little better, announces the launch of its inaugural Unless Project, a grant-meets-accelerator program providing $150,000 in marketing and capacity-building services to small organizations with big ideas but limited resources.
Up to four U.S.-based nonprofits will be selected to participate in the Unless Project to turn their transformational ideas into impact.
Simon Rogers, founder of ALBC, said: “In our experience, organizations with truly new and novel ideas struggle to get the resources and buy-in they need to bring their ideas to life. Today, the ability to communicate in the right way can make or break their success, and that gap between idea and impact is where the Unless Project comes in.”
The Unless Project seeks applications from nonprofits that are working on new, novel, provable, scalable and sustainable solutions to challenges in one of ALBC’s four focus areas:

• Human Health and Wellness
• Social Progress and Advocacy
• Artistic Activism
The short application process includes a five-question eligibility quiz (yes/no answers only), a short application (written or video submissions) and, for finalists, a 30- to 45-minute Zoom discussion with the selection committee.
The eligibility quiz is available now, and applications are open Aug. 15 through Oct. 15. Awardees will be notified on Dec. 15, and then be guided through a six-month process to transform their brand, tapping into all of ALBC’s capabilities and expertise.
ALBC will cover all marketing-related expenditures along the way. Additionally, the grant will include a $2,500 stipend to cover unplanned out-of-pocket expenses.

FCCC chair will head Temple department
Dr. Martin Edelman, chairman of the Department of Hematology/Oncology and Deputy Cancer Center Director for Clinical Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center, has been appointed inaugural chairman of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.
“Collaboration and integration among our faculty and staff at Fox Chase Cancer Center and the larger Temple Health community is critical to our growth and ongoing success. This is why we are so pleased to announce this appointment,” said Dr. Amy J. Goldberg, the Marjorie Joy Katz Dean at LKSOM.
Edelman joined Fox Chase in 2017 and will continue in his present roles there as well as continuing to hold the G. Morris Dorrance Jr. Chair in Medical Oncology, said Dr. Robert Uzzo, president and CEO of Fox Chase.
“Throughout his tenure, he has collaborated effectively with our clinical, scientific and administrative leadership to grow robust therapeutic, clinical research and translational research programs in hematology and medical oncology while leading the department in aligning emerging national trends with the delivery of care to cancer patients,” Uzzo said.
In his new role, Edelman will develop a strategic vision for the department, considering the tripartite mission of LKSOM and Temple University Health System: clinical care, education and research. This plan will guide the new department’s growth in medical oncology over the coming years to advance patient care; the cultivation of the next generation of physicians and other healthcare professionals; and achievement in grant awards, scholarly publications and annual presentations.
In his day-to-day duties, Edelman will oversee faculty with responsibility for the recruitment, management and retention of diverse professionals. He will provide ongoing mentorship to help steward the careers of faculty members. He will oversee training programs, both for the medical school and for continuing education of faculty, to promote academic excellence.
He will also oversee research programs to enhance performance; to provide input on research strengths and recommendations on research program directions; and to promote a culture of scholarship that encourages residents, fellows and postdoctoral fellows to engage in research.
As hospital license chief of service for Fox Chase and Temple University Hospital, Edelman will provide support for all hospital regulatory, quality, efficiency, safety and infection-control measures as well as strategic planning, capital allocation and fiscal, budgetary and hospital operations.
Edelman developed one of the most commonly used regimens for treating advanced lung cancer and has focused on the development of new agents and biomarkers to personalize lung cancer therapy.
He received his medical degree from Albany Medical College and completed residency training in internal medicine and a hematology/oncology fellowship, both at the Naval Hospital in San Diego. His professional experience includes more than 20 years of military service in the United States Navy Reserve, from which he retired with the rank of captain. ••
