Fox Chase unhappy with Rhawn Street apartments

The Fox Chase Civic Association last week discussed the construction of a 26-unit apartment building at 451 Rhawn St.

The group is appealing the city Department of Licenses and Inspections’ issuance of permits to the developer.

In the meantime, both sides are in discussions about how the building will look, with the civic association favoring brick facade over siding, to give it “the Fox Chase look,” said president Kate Friend.

The building will have a small amount of commercial space on the ground floor.

The civic association voted against a proposed settlement offered by the developer, and discussions will continue.

The group is also concerned about two larger proposed apartment buildings at 448 Rhawn St. and 518 Hartel Ave.

A top concern is traffic on already busy Rhawn Street.

In other news from the July 12 meeting:

• A moment of silence was observed for Pat Kelly, who died on July 9. She helped start Fox Chase Town Watch in 1995 and later worked with Fox Chase Champions, a nonprofit that offers activities for special-needs children.

• The crowd heard from Capt. Marc Metellus and community relations officer Mark Mroz, of the 2nd Police District, who said curfew enforcement has increased in the 2nd.

Rockledge Police Chief John Gallagher also addressed members. He said an arrest was made after a July 3 break-in at Abby’s Auto Center, 612 Huntingdon Pike. The suspect, a 23-year-old man, is from the 1500 block of N. Dover St. in Strawberry Mansion.

Gallagher invited the public to a screening of The Super Mario Bros. Movie on Thursday, July 20, at 7 p.m. at the playground at 135 N. Jarrett Ave.

Gallagher also announced that the annual car show will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10, from 3-7 p.m. on Huntingdon Pike.

• Politz Hebrew Academy is no longer interested in opening a school at 8450 Pine Road (near Shady Lane). Politz would have needed height and use variances to build the school. Neighbors expressed concern about traffic during a June 2022 presentation by Politz officials.

• National Night Out will take place on Aug. 1, from 6-8 p.m., in the Fox Chase Elementary School yard, 500 Rhawn St. There will be giveaways and food. At 5 p.m., the 2nd and 7th police districts will organize a leisurely community bike ride. Participants will be eligible for a free bicycle.

• Fox Chase Civic Association will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at American Legion Cpl. John Loudenslager Post 366, 7976 Oxford Ave. ••
