The Tacony LAB Community Art Center, 6918 Torresdale Ave., recently celebrated First Fridays on Torresdale Avenue by cutting a ribbon to dedicate a new mural.
The mural, titled Art is for Everyone, was completed by resident artist Laura Lyn Stern and Tacony LAB members. The mosaic, on the front of the center, was created with pieces of glass tile and sculpted ceramic elements.
Stern was joined by, among others, Tacony LAB program manager Barb Baur and Mural Arts Philadelphia executive director Jane Golden.
Offering remarks were U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle, state Sen. Jim Dillon and state Reps. Jared Solomon and Joe Hohenstein. State Rep. Pat Gallagher and City Councilman Mike Driscoll were also on hand.
The evening also included soft pretzels, cookies and snacks.
Boyle presented $500,000 to Mural Arts for its Color Me Back: A Same Day Work and Pay Program.
Golden called for art education for all students and explained that Philadelphia boasts some 4,400 murals. She described the murals as the autobiography of the city.
“She’s creating a new narrative in the Northeast,” Solomon said. ••
