New soccer space at Max Myers

State Rep. Jared Solomon and others were at Max Myers Recreation Center, 1601 Hellerman St., on Monday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a soccer cage.

The playing surface, enclosed with boards and not as long as a traditional soccer field, was built on the court outside the rec center building.

Solomon’s office secured $100,000 for the space.

Solomon was joined by, among others, Joe Hewitt, founder of The Sports Creative; Drew Chafetz, CEO and co-founder of love.futbol; City Councilwoman Quetcy Lozada; and Orlando Rendon, interim commissioner of the city Department of Parks and Recreation.

“What an amazing space,” Hewitt said.

Chafetz said this is love.futbol’s 66th project around the world. Project manager Sean Ndebele also represented love.futbol, a global nonprofit dedicated to providing safe spaces to play sports.

Rendon thanked Max Myers site supervisor Jeff Sperry and his staff.

Solomon said he’s been trying to make Max Myers a welcoming place since he was a civic leader.

“We are really trying to make this rec center come alive,” he said. ••
