Father Judge names baseball coach

Judge star pitchers Tim Gress and David Rodriguez return next year.

The champions have a new skipper.

According to social media posts by the school, Father Judge High School has named John Hunter as its new baseball coach, replacing Mike Metzger, who stepped down at the end of last school year.

He had good reason to celebrate after he called it a career. He guided Judge to a Catholic League championship in June and a few weeks later, he helped the Crusaders win a 6A state baseball championship.

Hunter is a North Catholic graduate who was an assistant coach at St. Joe’s Prep last year.

Hunter inherits a team that lost a lot to graduation, but has a lot back, including the top two pitchers.

David Rodriguez, the team’s ace, has been the Most Valuable Pitcher in the Catholic League in each of the past two seasons and Tim Gress, the No. 2 hurler, was impressive during his team’s run to the championships.
