The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital last week held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for advanced Cyberknife therapy to treat tumors.
The Cyberknife uses a robotic, non-invasive radiation therapy device to treat cancerous and benign tumors. The new technology delivers radiation from thousands of angles, enabling the physician to maximize the radiation dose to the tumor and minimize the dose to surrounding healthy tissue.
The Cyberknife is the only device designed to keep the radiation on target even if the patient changes position, coughs or moves their head. The device expands the scope of tumors that can be treated and reduces treatment times and side effects.
Cutting the ribbon were clinical professors Dr. Shari Rudoler, chief of the radiation oncology department, and Dr. Eric Gressen, a radiation oncologist. ••
