Smylie community fund marks 75 years

The holiday season is upon us.

The turkeys are about to be put in the ovens, and local high school football teams will be squaring off on Thursday.

Once the leftovers are eaten, attention will turn to the holidays, with Hanukkah celebrated Dec. 7-15 this year, followed by Christmas.

Many shoppers will be out in full force, pushing those credit card balances to the limit so everyone on their shopping list gets a nice gift and the family has plenty to eat.

But not everyone is that fortunate. Some of our neighbors cannot afford gifts for loved ones or big holiday meals.

The Times has already heard from a Burholme woman in need of a meal and a Bell’s Corner senior citizen hoping to provide for her granddaughter.

The 75th annual Eleanor Smylie Community Fund outreach program is here to help them.

The fund — named in memory of our late chairwoman — relies on the generosity of our readers. All money collected will be used to buy supermarket gift cards for individuals and families.

For those who donate, we’ll publish your names. Please let us know if you want your donation to remain anonymous.
