Benefit for wounded officers

A benefit will take place on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 6-10 p.m.,at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road, for three 2nd Police District officers shot in October during an incident on the 7500 block of Whitaker Ave.

The event will honor Sgt. Mitchell Farrell and Officers John Hesdon and Samantha Gress. There will be a silent auction, DJ and raffle baskets. No tickets will be sold, but monetary donations will be accepted at the door.

Meanwhile, in other news from last week’s 2nd Police District Advisory Council meeting, it was announced that victims assistance officer Danielle Walsh retired on Jan. 5. Capt. Marc Metellus and community relations officer Mark Mroz said Walsh did a good job, particularly dealing with senior citizens and victims of domestic violence.

“Danielle was fantastic, she really was,” Mroz said. “She truly is going to be missed.” 

Elsewhere at the Jan. 9 meeting:

• State Rep. Jared Solomon and Rich Montanez, deputy commissioner of the city Department of Streets, will meet with business owners on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m. at The Hub, 6434 Castor Ave. There will be a discussion of outdoor eateries on Castor Avenue. Call 215-342-6340.

• The Energy Coordinating Agency will present a winter utilities and resource fair on Friday, Jan. 19, from 1-4 p.m., at Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave. There will be food, music, giveaways, community resources and raffles.

• A paper-shredding and e-recycling event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Wissinoming Park, 5773-5945 Frankford Ave. (Cheltenham Avenue entrance). The event is sponsored by state Rep. Joe Hohenstein, state Sen. Tina Tartaglione, U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle and City Councilwoman Quetcy Lozada. Call 215-744-2600.

• Take Back Your Neighborhood will meet on Monday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at Max Myers Recreation Center, 1601 Hellerman St. The Energy Coordinating Agency will present an energy-conservation workshop. Free weatherization kits will be distributed.

• State Rep. Jared Solomon will hold a quality of life tele-town hall on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. There will be panelists from city departments. To join, call 877-229-8493, #119299.
